Is Your Character a Mary Sue? | Comments

I was curious about how one of my characters would do, so I put in Xamash-Oyen Alanor (Yes there is a reason for the name). They were brain wiped by some common fairies after they got lost in a deep forest, and were drugged/controlled with magical painkillers, to be used as a toy. The fairies realized that they could use Xama as a tool, so they found a more permanent solution to Xamas constant headaches: A soul trapping mirror. With no semblance of individuality Xama was carted around by the fairies as a murderer of demons, until Xama came in contact with an upcoming priest. The priest fell in love with Xama, but they were unable to reciprocate any feelings, so the priest tried a difficult ritual to give Xama back their humanity. The ritual had a catastrophic accident and the priest lost his life. Xama, now understanding how they had been taken advantage of, looks to make amends in hell for the crimes they have committed.

I used my character Florian Alderwood, (got 9% with him) he was raised in a nuclear biracial family, (french father and a black mother,) as an only child! His parents split up when he was eight and he was raised mostly by his mom. His parents primarily spoke French when Florian was a child and so he learned that first, but hes fluent in English too, (learned it from his mom after his parents split up.) but now has an accent that he definitely plays up because he thinks its sexy. Hes a bit above average intelligence-wise, but really isnt a very morally correct person. He goes to Cambridge for college, and meets his boyfriend, Anton, there. Anton is even more of an a--hole than florian, but florian is good at socializing and Anton isnt. Florian wants to move back to the states, and Anton agrees, so the pair move. Florian finds out that Anton has a hell of a grudge on a lawyer there, and so Florian decides to help him out with that. Now, Florian is an insufferable flirt and is extremely flashy all of the time, but this lawyers partner is doubly obnoxious, and the lawyer is sick of it. So in flounces Florian, decides to sleep with the guy, and then poisons him! A dash of arsenic in the vodka. He calls up Anton, who shoots the other guy, and Anton and Florian take off, crossing as many police jurisdictions as possible. Unfortunately for their master plan, having sex with someone tends to leave DNA. And Florians DNA was already in the system for a minor offense a few years earlier, so it really didnt take too long for them to get caught. Florian was charged with accessory to murder, (it really was Antons plan, Florian was just willing to do the dirty work for him,) and he gets charged with 2 years in the psych ward and 8 in the state penitentiary. Hes quite persuasive, however, and gets out on parole after 5. He never goes on to offend again, and just works white collar jobs for the rest of his life! Hes a fun little prick.

My oc is named Sochii, who is a demigod. She has selective memory, and doesn't remember too much about her childhood, so she tries not to think about it. Since she was born a demigod, she was born with a single power: anything she draws comes to life, but usually the drawing fades away after a little while. While she can be a bit strange and scare people with her strangeness, once you know her she's a nice girl who tries her best to bring out the good in others. (She's honestly my Minecraft skin with a backstory.)

Her name is her nationality is Korean-Japanese. Her past is quite a tragic (father having abuse her when 12) finally independent after 20 then dies (hit by a subway train bc someone accidentally push her) hates her mame bc his father gave her name.

Reincarnate as a villainess (ugh, i know) named Kayla (sometimes refers as Kayla-ssi by the girl or young mistress-nim). The name Kayla originates from my own classmates name. She's neither bad or good.

No, she does not meet God, just an old man in a shape of a voice that can transform himself as a character. She wishes to be a novelist either in her old life or in her new one.

My oc is Mary Jane(ironic I know) and is a fan-character for the dating sim "I love you, Colonel Sanders." They were basically the apprentice of Professor Dog, and studied along with the class course. Of course in my AU, the whole thing is much longer as for character development, and that sweet, sweet shipping. At first, she's really timid and inclusive, but proves to be very smart and witty to her classmates, always able to come up with some clever and complicated 'nerd comeback', which caught the attention of many people, more specifically the Player, Colonel Sanders, and Aeshleigh. But she does end up coming down with a crush for Aeshleigh cuz I'm all about that lesbian energy-

Got a 17 percent, my character is Araminta (Minty) Jones, an eleven-year old witch living in a small, isolated town in the English area, surrounded by a forest. Unlike most magics, she doesnt hide her powers. She is known as the town witch, and despite her age, people will often come to her for healing, spells, and potions. In her free time, she enjoys telling stories to and playing with the other kids in the town, as well as coming up with new charms and potions to help more people. She knows practically everybody in the area and is widely liked by the town. She does somewhat poorly handle the job of being the helper for pretty much everything magic. She tends to put everyone else above herself, even when her own troubles might be worse. She was raised by her grandmother who sided when she was 7, and she does have the ability to talk to many spirits but cant seem to find her grandmother.

Actually see him unravel through the writing. He's a character I put hours of research into and developed for years to give him depth, I just hope it wasn't all for naught. Edgy as he may be, he's not that far off from many big name stars we know today, be they from our generation, or many since passed.

He only got the hell out of his mom's house because at around 13ish, he sliced open his own arm and told the cops it was her doing, basically forcing CPS's hand after numerous attempts to get help from them. He eventually ran away in search of his dad, who turned out he was kidnapped from by his mother when she was deemed unfit to raise him. His father insisted took him in, encouraging his love of music for years. He was a loving parent to him, but he could never erase the years of hurt inflicted onto his son

Ricky loves his dad, but to a degree, still feels unworthy of him. Hard not to when for as long as you can remember, you were always told you weren't worth the ground you walk on.

Not only does he have his own mental health struggles that vary greatly from time to time, but his sexuality and keeping it out of the public's knowledge. Letting people find out could open him as well as his bandmates up to serious harm and hatecrimes. He is a gay man but it's much more difficult to hide when he suffers gynophobia and has a panic attack being NEAR a woman for less than half an hour. He tries hard to fake being straight at public appearances, but what people don't see is when he's sobbing in the bathroom for an hour because all he can picture is his mother and he feels like he's having a heart attack, terrified he'll wake up back in that house. They don't see how no matter how tough he acts, proclaiming that he doesn't need someone to 'tie him down,' that he longs for the intimacy his bandmates have with their girlfriends or wives. That he longs to just be normal.

They don't see when he's crying in the studio when everyone's gone because he feels like a complete failure in life even when he's made it to the top. They don't see how he never considers himself truly happy, or being worthy or being able to be happy..

Depressing character, yeah I know. He's difficult to explain, does way better in roleplay where you can

I got an 18% percent on my guy lol. His name is Ricky Rose, changed from Taylor Abbott. He's an 1980's rockstar. Lead singer, frontman, plays piano, and writes music. He's a college dropout because the band he shared with his brother got attention by the time he was 16, so he quit, thinking he wouldn't need it. It took another year and a half because they had to hire a new drummer, however.

Ricky himself is quite attractive. Porcelain skin with grey eyes and naturally dark red hair, not to mention sharp jaw and high cheekbones. But his personality is what often turns people away. He's an a--hole. He starts fights and arguments for seemingly no reason, goes f---ing crazy occasionally and his bandmates have to hold him back.

His primary reasoning for his behavior isn't used as an excuse, but it's still very important to what makes him tick. He was abused as a child, mentally and sexually, and it basically has him still acting like a child despite being an adult, clinging onto whatever childhood he had left. He's a very angry, hurt person who often lashes out as a way of protecting himself. He was diagnosed with manic depression (or bipolar disorder in our terms) but often refuses to take the pills he's prescribed unless manic episodes are too severe to just let them happen. After that, then he's too depressed to even move and it can take weeks to get him back on track.

People hate him because he's an a--hole. He knows that. He knows he's horrible to people. But he's just too afraid to open up. Too afraid of losing what happiness he could possibly gain from someone. He doesn't think he deserves love. He doesn't think he deserves life. He's a very dark character, but he's the reality for a large percentage of the rock and roll life. He dies in a hotel room miles from home with a needle in his neck. And unlike Nikki Sixx, he wasn't brought back.

He's very bleak, but there's still far more to his character than I described here. He's actually quite a fan favorite

I got 19% so let me explain her.

Her name is Shoga Black. She is a MHA fan character and one of the villains from the LOV.

Her quirk is animal shifting, she can turn into any animal she wants. Although it is werewolf-ified and has to have red and black colors. She is very close with Toga because I simp for Toga but they aren't together until very far into the story. She is 6'8 and is very very VERY muscular. But she is not abnormally strong besides punching and scratching with her claws. She takes into the form of a werewolf most often btw.

For a long time she seems to be mute and doesn't like to communicate verbally. When she does talk she has a very deep, gravely, Corpse like voice. Her main purpose in the story is to fight alongside Toga and Twice. And if you know, get revenge on Hawks for what he did.

She uses He/She pronouns, is Bi Gender, a Lesbian, and for the most part loves people and is very extroverted. She loves kids and small animals. She admires the thought of having kids and being a mother. She admires old people unless they are rude and mean.

Etc. She ran away from America and came to Japan to be completely isolated form anyone who knew her. She has many scars, 2 of which came from Toga's admiration for her love of blood, since myself have a love of blood (It was never related to Toga, just a fun coincidence).

This is a persona for a role play, I got 20% but I just thought i could use your expertise.

Long story short :

Her name is Alixe Kim, but she goes by X (TEN, in Roman numbers) and she is part of a gang and has to hide her real identity. She is the sister of the leader of the gang,shes younger by 4 years. They both grew up with their parents until X was about 8yo. Her father was betting and played a lot so he made loads of debts in a casino, bad luck the casino was owned by the mafia. To pay up, he started working for the mafia. Xs mother left because the father was messing up to much, leaving her children behind as she also wanted to be with another man. X will never forgive her.

Later on when X was 12yo, her dad got shot during a deal, but he still owned some money. The mafia sent the kids to a sort of foster mom that worked for them so that they would still pay up the bills (mules under 18yo are much appreciated). Through the years, X and her brother made their way in the gang so that at the end of their 20s brother was the gangs leader and X a important element.

X has a great upper body strength as she trained a lot for the gang, she is a gymnast. She can also use guns etc but she is better at messing with ppls mind. She lies a lot, defrauds, use her feminine charms etc She is a very good dealer thanks to this. She also has a hot temper and is easily started when someone delays in payment. She seems to enjoy herself in criminal activities but deep down she feels empty and unsatisfied with her life.

She also has a boyfriend, part of the gang, who is a jerk but doesnt mistreat her. Just a macho dude who cheats kinda often, she will dump him at some point.

The OC used is part of an original story. She is one of three main characters, who are part of a group of five friends. She's minorly physically disabled and has a fear of heights. She has wings because she's not human, in a world full of not humans. She's 16, though I may change her age as she's only 16 because she was original a human fan character for a game and most of the game's protagonists are 16. She's introverted but has no problem interacting with people she knows well and trusts. She tends to bottle up her emotions and wants to show no weakness. She goes through an emotional journey throughout the course of the story showing her it's okay to show weakness and stuff like that, but she still continues to bottle up her emotions and tries not to show weakness because she doesn't like dealing with emotions. Her fear of heights is bad and often weighs the group down, and the group is usually annoyed. She's lesbian, and the other characters are a straight guy, a biromantic girl, a aromantic boy, and a toric (attracted to men) non binary person. Her only possible love interest in the group is the Bi woman, but neither see the other like that and she doesn't get to know any other people well in the course of the story, so doesn't get a love interest. Her parents divorced but she still keeps in touch with both of them and has a good relationship with them.

My OC got 23%. I honestly didn't know how to answer some of the questions, as the way my story works is a bit of a special case compared to the answers given. For one, my story, in a way, deliberately uses tropes such as "karma for the antagonist" or "edgy for the sake of being edgy" as plot points, as my oc, who is technically too morally gray to be considered good or bad, starts to become self-aware and realize the one-dimensionality of his world, and that's what drives the plot forward. I would really like some genuine feedback for my story, but I'm a bit unsure on how to explain it thoroughly, as it's pretty long.

I got 13%!! (Yay!!) the character i used was one called Harrkell. He has natural ginger hair and dark brown eyes (he also is very slim but has a history of undernourishment). He is a teenager and lives in another universe from our own. Though he wasnt raised by his parent he was raised by his older sister and later also his adopted brother (both were killed in a war which is a huge reason for his motivation). He doesnt have any powers though does have adhd (this isnt directly told in the story but he does express symptoms). He is a theif and lives with his (living) younger sister. Though he is flirtatious (and cocky) he doesnt get a love intrest. Also he is extremely scared of bugs. He doesnt have powers (though there is magic in my world). Any ideas to spice him up (or if I shouldnt).

The OC/Fursona (don't bash me for that) Is called Avi Yan, a play on words for Avian, because she's an American Robin. Yes, that's kinda cheesy but that's okay. Apparently, she's 19% a Mary Sue. That's not bad, at least for a character who stays inside her house all day, is almost always on the computer, and only goes outside once a week. Avi's obsessed with a fictional character to the point where she made a religion about them. Yes, that's what I do. This stupid-ass bird acts exactly like me, except she's less closeted about it. f---.

I've done this test many times for the same OC I kept changing and for her final results I got 20% she is officially done, yes quite bland as she is not a fan character but I like it that way :)
