  • What American accent do you have?
    Your Result: The Midland 77%

"You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.

That's a Southern accent you've got there. You may love it, you may hate it, you may swear you don't have it, but whatever the case, we can hear it.

    I'm from Maryland. How'd I get this?????????

  • Accurate as far as a large area of the country goes, but the PA accent is much different than the Southern IN accent. Other questions would be more discriminating (pronunciation of creek, roof, bush; names of items - sofa, couch, Davenport). Really, though? Whore was the best sound-alike you could come up with?

  • I got Midland, I found that a little funny since I've grown up in Tennessee, a VERY southern area. But I guess I just don't have an accent... (I wish I did). Well, then again, everyone does. Spanish is my first language so I probably do have some degree of Spanish accent in my English.

The interesting thing here is, I grew up in the Atlanta suburbs, and most people I meet, if they share their opinion, are surprised that I'm from here(still around A-town). I've had some people guess Florida or the Midwest, with others commonly saying I don't really have an accent (better clarified as "neutral American English"). I think this category being the "not presenting an (strong) accent" is what has some folks on here in such a tizzy because they've missed that aspect (here come the hate comments!), the fact that it's lacking, more so than defining a regional accent.

In my case my parents were consistently reinforcing academics and would always insist I enunciate my words "correctly" (which I believe is a social construct like that hideous word "normal")

You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop."

Im from north New Jersey, but okay. I dont call soda "pop" either

  • This quiz was quite accurate I do have an excellent voice that could be a host on the TV show or radio I am actually from Michigan but it said I had a Midland voice and it had every other state but Michigan walking there but my heart is in Dallas so I'll take it that's where I'll live one day anyway. Hopefully 2023 I will be a Texas resident

  • I get Boston every time. I pronounce my R's but not as heavily as in the south. My mom sounds like she pahks the cah in Hahvahd yahd lol We both use some of the Boston slang like bubbler instead of water fountain and jimmies instead of sprinkles.

  • I got Midland, which I think is pretty correct. I spent the first ten years of my life in Michigan, then we moved to Kentucky, where I thankfully lost most of my despised MI accent :) I don't necessarily have a genuine KY accent though, and now we're in Missouri and I fit in pretty well here, accent- wise. So I don't think the quiz is exhaustive obviously, but it's definitely pretty good

  • What American accent do you have?
    Your Result: North Central 88%

"North Central" is what professional linguists call the Minnesota accent. If you saw "Fargo" you probably didn't think the characters sounded very out of the ordinary. Outsiders probably mistake you for a Canadian a lot.

As a Canadian; yes, people do think Im Canadian a lot lol which may be cause I live in Canada and have an Ontarian accent and have said that Im Canadian many times before lmao

Judging by how you talk you are probably from north Jersey, New York City, Connecticut or Rhode Island. Chances are, if you are from New York City (and not those other places) people would probably be able to tell if they actually heard you speak.

  • Awesome quiz, apparently I have a 100% Midland accent. And given that I'm from NE Ohio, I'd say that's pretty spot on.
