  1. What is your age?
  2. What is your gender?
  1. Ryan stood beside you. “Don’t wait for me,” you tell him. He doesn’t answer. “FIVE FOUR THREE-“ You weren’t ready. Where was your mum? Where were your brothers? “TWO-“ the guy blasted a gun. And you were running. You were being trampled on. You fell over. Tons of feet herd past you. Even over you. Five feet leaps, incredible you’d say. “ERIN GET UP!” someone shouts. You get back on your feet. Ryan was whizzing ahead. You take off blasting full speed. You passed fifteen girls and two guys. Bad idea, because for the first 100 meters, you were hacking for breath.
  2. You glance to the crowds of parents. You couldn’t find them yet, your family. Coach Denis’s voice rings in your ears. “You don’t always win, but you never give up.” You weren’t going to be in first, but you weren’t giving up. You slowed down your run. You forced your legs to keep propelling. There’s a murderer behind me, you think to yourself. I gotta keep going. It’s not like I’m going to die. What’s going to happen if I run too fast? Nothing, keep going, keep going. You remember that dog, the day the bus missed you and you had crossed through an old lady’s yard and she had a dog.
  3. Halfway through the track, the band of runners disperses. Runners fall behind you. Runners dash ahead. You find yourself running side by side with a girl with glasses. She was a Phillines middle schooler. You could read her shirt. She was about your height and she was churning just as hard as you were. You could pass her. You think it’d be easy. It wasn’t. You guys reflect each other. You couldn’t lose her no matter how hard you tried. She couldn’t lose you either no matter how fast she went. Your breath was running short and the hill was not very welcoming. You had to take it down.
  4. Chris was out there somewhere in the crowd and you didn’t want him to see you walk up the hill like a lot of the sixth grade girls. You took on the hill at a steady pace. The glasses girl, to your glee, stops to walk. Your glee didn’t last long. She was bursting full speed up the hill right past you. You stare at her. She tricked you. She had reached the top and disappeared over the other side. Now you were on top of the hill. No, she can’t just pass you like that so easily. You take off downhill passing several people and end up just a foot away from the girl. Her brunette ponytail swished side to side. Your legs had a speed limit. You couldn’t go any faster than what you were now. You were tiring. She was getting ahead.
  5. You were losing hope. You’re getting a red ribbon. No blue ribbon for you. Who were you kidding anyways? This was your first meet. Of course you couldn’t just get first place so easily. You were too proud. You still could not find your ruckus family. Your mom was not a hooter like that one dad who was hooting off his son. Or a real big cheerer or whistler. But it’d be nice to have parents like that. Two parents. One that stomps and hoots, one that cheers and whistles. Maybe the car broke down…
  6. And then suddenly you hear them. You hear Willy. Your head flicks to your right. There they were. They were there all along. And Willy was doing it. Willy was going bonkers, Willy was shouting at the top of his lungs, he’s exploding, “GO EWIN GO EWIN GO EWIN GO EWIN GO GO GO!!” He was sitting at mum’s shoulders, the highest place on Earth and your mum was smiling. And she was clapping cheering with the parents and all your brothers around her were pumping their fists with Willy screaming the loudest. Two words, “GO EWIN!” And you did go. That sent something surging. Something inside of you erupted and spills out. You were running on fire, on pure diesel gas. For a moment of strength you pass the glasses girl and to your delight you pass a few guys and girls.
  7. Your family was here and they were following the runners and parents to cheer on you. You felt like you could run forever. The finish line came closer. You were nearly there. Someone bumps into your elbow. The glasses girl reached the line first. She was 20th place out of 50 runners and you were 21st place. You were just one second late. And they handed you a red ribbon.
  8. You go home with your mum. In the car you stare at the red ribbon that says Participant. Instead of crunching it up and throwing it away, you stuff it in your pocket. You were expecting too much. The guy who finished last was expecting too much. You did your best. And that was fine. “You smell,” says your mum. “No der,” you tell her as you buckle up your brothers and yourself in the back. You told her about Ryan coming over everyday after school until the test. And then you remember Chris too. So you tell her about that too in the library at 5 pm too. She’s shaking her head and smiling these weird dreamy smiles that made you regret you ever told this to her.
  9. She agrees. You were going to bike over to Ryan’s when you get home and then you guys could study. Mum offers to go out for ice cream for your brothers. Perfect, you think, Now I can really get some stuff into him since the house will be quiet. As soon as your mum parks the car you drop off your backpack in the house and mount your bike. You ride it up to the porch. You studied it. It was… too girly. You rip off the extra accessories.
  10. You bike down the road. You pass go through an alley. You pass a gang of guys. You didn’t look at them. But they were whistling. You pedaled faster. It takes you a few minutes to get there. You park your bike, knock at the door. You wait. A woman opens the door. She was the same one who drove the car yesterday to pick up Ryan after school with the pretty doll in the back. “Oh, hello there dear,” she says. “Hi, does Ryan live here?” you ask your face already blushing. “Oh yes and you are?” “Uh, a friend, Erin White,” you say. The woman smiles. “Come inside, I’m making Ryan’s favorite of all times. Has he told you? Cinnamon pumpkin bars,” she says with a familiar warm glow to her eyes. You liked her already. You didn’t refuse. “Wait here in the living room, I’ll go get you some bars for you to take along the way, I’ve made whole batches of them. Any friend of Ryan gets these specials,” she says cheerfully. “Ah, thanks,” you say politely smiling.
