  1. It was a crisp night in the season of Newleaf. Shadows danced around while the moonlight glistened through the trees. A sharp signal, a moment of silence, then cats bolted out of the bushes, screeching at each other as they attacked. "Oakheart! How dare you hunt in our territory!?" Tigerclaw yowled as he pounced on Oakheart, then tightening his claws on Oakheart's pelt. "The Sunningrocks belong to ThunderClan!"
  2. Oakheart sneered under Tigerclaw's tight paws. "After tonight, Tigerclaw, this will just be another RiverClan hunting ground." Tigerclaw puffed, then lifting his head quickly to see Oakheart's supporting clanmates yowling in challenge while swimming across the river.
  3. As the other RiverClan cats hopped out of the river, bolting towards random ThunderClan warriors of their choice, Tigerclaw jerked his head back at Oakheart. "You may swim like otters, but you and your warriors do not belong in this forest!" Tigerclaw took another glance at his clan's warriors, just to see Mousefur being critically attacked by one of the RiverClan cats. Tigerclaw scared the opposing cat away from Mousefur by pouncing at it, which gave Oakheart an easy chance to escape unwounded while the RiverClan cat who attacked Mousefur bolted away. Tigerclaw turned to Mousefur, screeching. "Quick, Mousefur, RUN!" Mousefur quickly limped away, nodding weakly.
  4. Suddenly, RiverClan cats came dashing towards Tigerclaw, screeches echoed through the forest. The opposing cats attacked too quickly for Tigerclaw to defend himself from all of them. As he tried to fight off the attackers, a broad voice called out to him. "Tigerclaw!"
  5. "This is useless! There are too many RiverClan warriors!" the cat stepped forward. "No, Redtail! ThunderClan will never be beaten!" Tigerclaw yowled, jumping away from the crowd of angry RiverClan cats. "This is our territory!" Redtail looked down. "ThunderClan will honor your courage, Tigerclaw, but we can not afford to lose any more warriors to fight against these impossible odds. We will have another chance to avenge this defeat." Tigerclaw nodded as Redtail hopped on a high tree branch. "Retreat, ThunderClan, RETREAT!" called the broad ThunderClan deputy.
  6. ThunderClan warriors dashed over the Sunningrocks in submission. Oakheart stared, then yowled in victory as other RiverClan warriors followed his actions, and yowled too. Tigerclaw was the last to hop over the Sunningrocks, but stopped and looked over his shoulder. He stared in fury and envy, but hopped over the Sunningrocks to catch up with his clanmates.
  7. Later that night, Bluestar sat by herself. Stars filled the dark, blue sky like shining crystals. Spottedleaf padded slowly, a small purr escaped from her throat. Bluestar turned her head, her voice was soft and calm. "How is Mousefur?" Spottedleaf dipped her head. "Her wounds are deep, Bluestar. But she is young and strong, she will heal quickly." Bluestar padded to Spottedleaf. "And the others?" Spottedleaf lifted her head. "They will all recover too."
  8. Bluestar turned, sighing. "We are lucky not to have lost any of our warriors this time." Spottedleaf nodded in agreement. "You are a gifted Medicine Cat, Spottedleaf." Bluestar dipped her head. "I am deeply troubled by tonight's defeat. ThunderClan has not been defeated in it's own territory ever since I became leader. These are difficult times for our clan." Bluestar lifted her head, then looking at the sky. "The season of Newleaf is late, and there are fewer kits. ThunderClan needs more warriors if it is to survive."
  9. Spottedleaf turned to Bluestar. "But the year is only just beginning. There will be more kits when Greenleaf comes." Bluestar turned away. "Perhaps, but training young to become warriors takes time. If ThunderClan is to defend it's territory, it must have new warriors as soon as possible." Bluestar looked deep into the sky. Spottedleaf looked at Bluestar. "Are you asking StarClan for answers?" Bluestar hesitated before answering. "It is at times like this when we need the words of ancient warriors to help us. Has StarClan spoken to you?" Bluestar looked at Spottedleaf. "Not for some moons, Bluestar." Spottedleaf informed. Spottedleaf then looked in the sky and a deep, echoing yowl rang in her ears. She knew that this was a message from StarClan, and widened her eyes. In her vision, Spottedleaf saw a blazing cat made of fire dashing through the fields. She jerked her head back, then slowly opened her eyes and gasped quietly. "It was a message from StarClan. Fire alone can save our clan." Bluestar looked puzzled. "Fire? But fire is feared by all the clans. How can it save us?" Spottedleaf shook her head. "I do not know, but this is the message StarClan has chosen to share with me." Bluestar nodded. "You have never been wrong before, Spottedleaf. If StarClan has spoken, then it must be so. Fire alone will save our clan."
  10. (Prologue) Rusty woke up in his kittypet bed, looking around. He lay back down, closing his eyes, but his eyes shot right back open. Rusty stretched and eased out of his bed, walking in the kitchen to see bowls of fresh food and water filled in them. He walked over to his food bowl and ate a few pieces, then wiped his mouth off with his paw. Rusty looked up at an opened window and a crazy idea came into his mind. He jumped onto the counter and out of the window. Rusty hopped onto a wooden fence and sat there for a few minutes. "Rusty, Rusty! Come here, kitty!" he heard his twoleg call to him in his mind, but kept going on and jumped over the fence. "Hey!" Rusty heard a small, friendly voice calling to him. "Where are you off to, Rusty?" the cat jumped over the fence to join him. "Hello, Smudge." Rusty greeted the cat. "You're not going into the woods, are you?" Smudge sounded worried. "Just for a look." Rusty shrugged. "Heh. You wouldn't get me in there, it's dangerous." Smudge pointed out. "Henry said he went into the woods once." Rusty narrowed his eyes. "That fat old tabby never went into the woods. He's hardly been beyond his own garden since his trip to the vet. All he wants to do is eat and sleep!" Smudge hesitated. "No--really, he caught a robin in there." Rusty smirked. "Well, if he did, I bet it was before going to the vet. Now he complains about birds because they disturb his dosing." Smudge yawned. "Well, anyways, Henry said there are all sorts of dangerous animals out there. Huge wildcats who eat live rabbits for breakfast and sharpen their claws on old bones!" Rusty looked at Smudge. "I'm only going for a look around, I won't be long." Smudge smiled a half grin-half frown. "Well, don't say I didn't warn you." Rusty nodded, then started again towards the forest.
