Jayden took his plate. “Thank you.” He smiled, taking a bite of his food.

The waiters left. Chester moved the food around on his plate, suddenly very worried about Basil’s influence on Maeve.
‘I haven’t seen you in a while, Basil,’ Chester said, interrupting their conversation. -
Basil snapped to attention, like a dog when they see a squirrel. “Huh? Oh, yeah, I’ve been busy lately. Haven’t really had time to hang out.”

‘Fair enough. Uh, what have you been up to?’ Chester had never really been close to Basil. Basil had always been his best friend’s annoying little brother, but now they were adults so it wasn’t very appropriate to think of him like that.

“Bouncing around between jobs. Trying to figure out what I want to do for the rest of my life.” Basil shrugged. Oliver raised an eyebrow slightly.

Chester frowned slightly. ‘You’re not going to continue with your shop?’ he asked. Maeve looked at Basil.

“It’s a cool shop and all, it’s just getting annoying cleaning up after certain messy customers.” Basil gave a joking glare at Maeve. “Besides, renting out a shop is getting pretty pricey. I don’t think I can afford it for another couple months.”

‘Ah, right.’ Chester gave Maeve a look, who poked her tongue out at him. ‘What else are you planning to do, then?’

“I’m not sure. I’ve been thinking about working at a bookstore, but I’m worried it won’t be as fun as the potions. Cleaning up bookshelves doesn’t sound quite as exciting as cleaning up spilled potions, y’know?”

‘True. Potions are theoretically more exciting,’ Chester said. ‘I’m always willing to lend you money if it gets too hard,’ he added.

“Thanks.” Basil grinned. “I appreciate it.”

Chester smiled and nodded, then went back to his food.

Jayden started eating as well.

Chester played with Jayden’s hair absentmindedly.

Jayden leaned into his touch.
