Blake sighed and ran his fingers through his shaggy blond hair. He zipped up his backpack and slid it on. It was surprisingly light, considering how much sentimental value the items inside held. He paused, then sighed again and shrugged off the backpack to add one more item. He reached over to his nightstand, picked up a picture of him and his parents smiling, and laid it gently inside. Those happy times with his parents had long passed, since his dad started drinking and his older sister, his guardian angel, had gone to college.
Maddison was already packed. She had been for a few days now; she had tucked the bag away in the back of her closet, hidden beneath a pile of dirty clothes. She was sitting on her bed, fiddling with her fingers and bouncing her leg. It was just about time for her to sneak out, now. She had been waiting for the day to come for weeks, and now it was finally here. She glanced at her watch. As soon as it struck the hour, she rose, moving to the closet to collect her bag.
Blake stared at his alarm clock on his nightstand, sitting on his bed. The moment it hit the time he was supposed to leave, he jumped up, hoisted his bag on, and opened up his window, stepping outside and closing it behind him.
Maddison headed out of her bedroom, carefully walking through the hallway. The rest of the house was dead silent, save for some of the clocks and electric appliances making their familiar sounds. She made it all the way to the front door without any interference. For a moment, she turned to look into the darkness, trying to make out some of the photos along the entryway wall.
Part of her didn't want to leave; she wanted to believe that things at home could get better. But they couldn't. The only time she ever felt safe was when she was with Blake. She had to do this. She turned her attention back to the door, unlocking it and quickly stepping outside. She pulled the door shut behind her, taking off into a sprint the second her hand left the knob.
Blake was running down the sidewalk, his backpack thumping on his back. He ran as fast as he could, ignoring the pain in his side until he reached the meeting place. He looked around but didn't see Madison anywhere. He hoped she was coming.
It took her a while, but eventually Maddison made it to the meeting place. Her face lit up with excitement when she saw him. She dashed over to him, moving to embrace him. "You made it!" She said breathlessly, sighing in both relief and exhaustion.

Blake was grinned, and let a laugh he was unable to keep back escape him. He held her tight, breathing in the soothing coconut smell of her soft hair. "Of course," he whispered.
Maddison was relieved to be in his hold. This was the moment she had been waiting for; just the two of them, ready to face the world together. She slowly pulled away after a moment, smiling up at him. "Let's get out of this town and go start our adventure!"
He nodded eagerly, giving her hair one last stroke and stepping back. "Okay. Where should we go? I didn't plan this far ahead.."
(The goal was for them to somehow enter a portal to a different world, right?)
Maddison inhaled deeply, throwing her hands up. "I don't know. Anywhere! We can go anywhere at all, the world... It's ours, now."
