"I'm not sure how to prove it except that...it's truly how I feel." He thought for a moment. "I've heard that the Quakers are a small group of Americans against slavery, and they're letting slaves stay in their homes secretly so they can escape. Maybe I can find one and talk to them to arrange something." He stopped, and hesitantly took the other's hand. "I'll give up my whole life for this, that's how far I would prove it."
-
He listened intently, almost nodding as he heard the words. He felt some hope in what he said, that maybe Jamie would really bail him out. He was almost joyful. But when he hand was taken by him, he blushed furiously and suddenly the angered look came back. "W-wouldn't be esurprised if you did.." he stuttered.
-
Jamie lightly brought his hand back, afraid to anger him again. "I have to go, my dad might be around soon. I'll be back after dinner." He looked softly at him, then had to get up. "Drink as much as you can. I think you're dehydrated..." He waved goodbye to them and started to run back again.
-
He nodded understandingly, then gave a harsh look when he said left. "Adios," he muttered softly, not even sure how to feel anymore. Other than the pain.
"He's a nice boy," the young man from before said to him in Spanish, smiling a bit. -
As he made his way up he saw his brother coming out of the stables with a smirk. Oh no... "Yeah, don't think I didn't see what you did, Jamie." The older pulled his arm roughly to talk to him. "What are ya now, some kind of slave lover?" "Louis, stop. I was just trying to hel-" "Yeah, sure. We don't help the slaves, ya hear? They fend fer themselves out there. We don't lower ourselves to their level." Jamie bit his lip, wanting to tell him off but stayed quiet. "Listen, won't tell ma or pa about this, just remember that when I own this place, I won't let foolishness like your's get by, ya hear?" He simply nodded, then as his arm was let go of, headed back to the house quickly.
-
"A hardheaded Gringo, he is," Girvan replied in Spanish as well, shaking his head. "He will get caught and then what? The one person with a heart would be dead, that's what."
"Tough love, isn't it?" the other laughed, patting his back. "You can relax and think about him. We'll get to the work."
"Tch!" Girvan hissed angrily. -
Jamie laid on his bed, sighing. His mind was tied up in everything that's been happening. He...hated his brother. Though he didn't like that word, it was the only one that fit. And his parents just loved him, thinking he was the best thing in the whole world. Even before his heart to help the slaves, he was always 'the second son'. His mother had even said before that 'We already had one, we really didn't need another'.
He shook those away, knowing he really didn't care anymore what his family thought. The only person he did seem care about was Girvan... -
Despite getting pissed off, he did rest. He didn't want to pass out again. Whilst he watched the others work in the fields, he thought about how the other boy had saved him, even though they didn't even know each others' names.
"He's Gringo to me.." he muttered under his breath. "No matter what, he's a Gringo.. Damn people who took me away from Motherland," he vented angrily. Yet, he somehow couldn't really stay mad at Jamie. -
Somehow, he managed to take a very short nap, and woke up for dinnertime. It was a dreamless sleep, but from when fell asleep and awoke, his first thoughts were about him. He sighed, going down to face his family and think how he can bring enough down for them. Maybe even some medicine if he could find some.
-
When the day became dark finally, he got up lazily and set to collecting the baskets of everything that had been harvested. He felt bad about laying back the whole day, but he guessed that it couldn't be helped. He just had to not worry so much.
-
Jamie had to listen to his father's racist remarks, and also complaints about things that he could fix himself if he really wanted to. It was bothersome, but he learned to shut it out mostly, after all this time. Once finished he took the plates and headed into the kitchen, preparing the basket he was bringing quickly.
-
When it was done everyone headed to their spaces, except for Girvan. He remembered that Jamie had told him that he would be back and.. He just wanted to see if he was really coming back. Or not. Didn't really matter to him, honestly.
-
He got out quietly, and headed down to the field. He saw Girvan waiting, and gave a gently smile. "Are you feeling better? I could go get some more water, if you all need some."
-
"It fine. Thank you," he growled lightly. "You actually came."
-
"Of course." He looked up lightly. "Is something wrong?"
