He began then, to work in the hot sun and to have his back to begin to ache. He hated this work because it wore him and others down so quickly. In fact, the majority of men that worked were only a few years over thirty, yet they looked so much older because of all the work.
Not only did it cause him extreme pain and aging over time, but his skin had become so much more tan that it already was when he first started. It was dirty too, and full of scars. Just like everyone else. -
He ran in and got dressed quickly before showing up at breakfast. His father was in his chair reading the newspaper in silence, unless there was something he read that he wished to complain about. He was a contentious man and no one wanted to get on his bad side. His mother was just a stone cold person, almost bitter. His brother, the haughty rich boy who thinks he can take on the world and rule it into the palm of his hands.
And then there was Jamie, the odd one out. The one who liked outdoors and animals and seeing the good in people. Though pretty much every aspect of him had to be hidden, or he'd get in trouble.
"Your instructor will be here any minute, James. Go into the study and wait for her." His mom announced, and he gave a nod, heading off to meet an old, crabby woman, his teacher. -
The man who worked beside him was not his father, but it was only thing close to his father. He was a wise man, with a look so cold, but a soul so warm. When Girvan was sold off at a very young age, he was separated from his entire family. The man beside him was the one who raised him since he came to this plantation. He was the one that Girvan called his father.
He wanted to know who his real parents were, and who his siblings were. If he had any.. But that would require him running away to find them, and he'd surely be killed if he was caught. And by now, finding them would be impossible. He didn't really like thinking about it.
He continued working, his hands sore and his back on fire from pain and heat. But yet he didn't whine. He was old enough not to. -
Jamie couldn't help thinking about how hot it would be outside and how the slaves had to work out in that. He couldn't help it, how his mind was drift to things like that. Nor could he imagine how hard it must be to be in their place. He knew that most were transfered and didn't even have their families.
"James, are you listening?" The woman barked, pointing to a math problem in his book. "Sorry, yes ma'am." He read it aloud and solved it, then worked on others.
When he finally finished his studying, he went up to his room, and looked out the window, daydreaming a bit. -
During the middle of their working, there was gasping throughout the field. Girvan turned to look, and was shocked. One of the younger men working had passed out from the heat and the pain. Two men went to help him up before he was caught "sleeping" on the job.
Girvan tried to ignore the commotion and work. Of course he felt bad and felt terrified for his own wellbeing, but he couldn't be caught just glimpsing and not working. Though the noises and the talking kept his mind at an uneasy pace. -
(I have a better idea, instead of them sneaking up north maybe they go to find and save Girvan's family and go to their homeland? :D)
Jamie saw this, gasping softly himself. He felt he had to do something, even if it was in broad daylight. He prayed his sneaking skills were good enough, and went down to get a bucket of water, and whatever rags he could find. Carefully, he slipped over to the field. -
(THAT. I love that idea! :'D)
While the commotion had gotten hold of everyone else, Girvan noticed the master's son come close with what seemed to be a bucket. Would he hit them with the bucket? Well, whatever he planned to do, Girvan wasn't going to trust him.
"El hijo! El hijo!" he whispered loudly, yet they didn't listen to him. They were too caught up in waking up the young man. -
(Hurrayz! :D)
He carefully walked to the edge of the field, putting down the bucket and rags. "I-I saw h-him fall, s-s-so I h-h-ope t-this h-h-helps." The boy stuttered, barely making eye contact with anyone. After a moment he sprinted away, heading back up to his room. -
(So much stuttering, boi. :o)
They all stared, dumbstruck. Just for a moment, though. In an instant Girvan ran to get the bucket and rags, and put them by the fallen young man so that he could be tended to. While they finished the as fast as they could, Girvan stared at the tracks of the other boy.
Yes, he was definitely the song of the slave owner. The resemblance was strong. But he was nothing like them in personality.. He didn't seem so demanding, nor cruel. -
(Yes, gah, he's so cute. xD)
Jamie saw none of his family in sight, luckily. Everything worked out well. He crawled onto his bed, thinking of what he had just done. He finally got to but what he felt into action. It felt good to do so. He wondered if he could continue this, and maybe, just maybe, gain some trust from them. He felt a smile creep to his face, and for once, he felt happy. -
(Yes, he is. xD)
Finally the young man woke, in a panic. A wave of relief washed through the crowd and, though he was supposed to rest, the man got back to work. He seemed edgy, but he was determined to get something done.
Girvan was still staring at the trail, wondering why it could have been that someone who is the family of a slave owner could have cared. -
His mind raced of things he could do, and it settled on the fact there were always so many leftovers after dinner. He could carefully sneak some over if he was quick about things. He couldn't help but remember how dangerous this all was, and that if he were caught it could mean problems for both him and the slaves, but he couldn't bring himself to just turn a blind eye any longer. He never felt like he belonged to his family anyway. He had heard stories of people helping the slaves before, but they usually got caught and punished, some even hung. It was a risky job, but he wanted to live a life of meaning, even if it could be cut short.
-
"Are you coming back to work?"
He turned and saw how his 'father' was waiting patiently for him to continue his work. He felt bad, having just stood there for a good amount of time while others worked. He nodded and solemnly went back to the back-breaking work. Yet despite himself being conscious as to what he was doing, his mind kept asking why and how someone who owned slaves could even bat an eye at his or her slaves. -
When it got later that evening, Jamie went to the dinner table as normal, eating supper with his 'family'. Still not much talk, except his father going on about his day, and then his brother requesting to take the horses out in the morning. Focusing on his plan, he waited until the end when they would go into the den and he would go up to his room. Except when he went up, he managed to hide a good amount of food. Trying to stay calm and keep even breathing, he snuck carefully outside, luckily it had gotten a bit darker out by now.
-
By then the work was much easier and everyone was ready to end the day. Girvan was collecting whatever had been harvested that day, so just his luck that he was the one to notice a shadow.
He was stark still, too frightened to speak. He tried to ignore the fact that there was a shadow, and attempted to keep collecting without paying attention to it.
