  1. We walked out of the janitor's closet and got stars from other people in the waiting room. We sat back down in silence. "So, we used to go out then?" I inquired after 15 minutes. Christofer smiled and nodded. "Did you follow me to California or was it just a coincidence?" "Your parents told me ahead of time so it wasn't obvious." "Where's your parents?" "Back in Arizona. I live alone." I felt bad for Christofer. He was doing all of this for me. To keep me safe. "Why are you here when you don't have to be? Nobody's forcing you to stay or protect me, you know. You cam leave any time you want. I bet you miss the normal life where you things weren't as complicated." The tips of Christofer's lips tugged up. "I know I don't have to stay and protect you, but I want to. I care about you; I always have. Everyday, I had to see you with some other guy other than me, and it bothered me because back then it was always me there. I had to fight the urge to say you were my girlfriend when you probably wouldn't even know what I was talking about. Especially when I met Alex, oh my gosh. But I love you. I've loved you every minute we were together, and every minute we were apart."
  2. I was thinking about a way to respond to that when Auntie Lisa came into view. "Alex will be able to come home tomorrow. I'll sleep here, while you go home." She took a sharp breath and said, "Actually, no. I don't want you being home alone and the hospital only allows one guest to sleep in a room. Christofer, do you think you could stay with my niece for the night?" I widened my eyes. Christofer hesitated, but eventually agreed. I said one more goodbye to Alex, whom was sleeping, before leaving and then climbed back into Christofer's pick up truck where we were heading home. I opened up the garage and walked inside. It felt like there was a ghost in the house. It was still the afternoon, so I flopped down on the couch and stared at the ceiling fan. "Nice place," I heard Christofer say, taking a seat. "Thanks," I said quietly. I flipped the t.v on and tried thinking of something to say to break the ice. "Do you want some lunch?" I asked, shifting awkwardly. "No, I'm good. Thanks though," he replied. Thankfully the door bell rang or else I swear I would have melted on the spot.
  3. Christofer came alongside to answer it and I was surprised to find Nick there. He glanced from Christofer to me and then opened his mouth to say something, but then closed it. "Oh hi, Nick. Are you feeling okay?" I remembered the last time I saw him at his party. His gray eyes looked restless. They looked more like a storm than the usual, dreamy rainfall. "Yeah, I'm fine. Thank you for what you did at the party. My brother, Xavier's, friends kept telling me to drink, and I guess I just lost control. Sorry you had to see me that way. I'm not that type of person." I took a while before answering just for dramatic effect. That's just how I roll. "It's okay, everyone makes mistakes." Nick stood there for a while before perking up and handed me a zoo pass. "Remember?" I took the pass in my hand and smiled. "We still on for that?" Nick looked like his normal, handsome self. "I hope so. I mean, you still kind of owe me for that whole Tara thing." I smirked and decided to play along. "Of course I do. Your actions are worthy of me going to the zoo with you. When?" Nick grinned like a little kid. "How about Tuesday? I can't Monday because I have to take care of something for my...brother." I've noticed that Nick shrinks up whenever he mentions his brother, and I wondered why. "Sounds great. I'll see you then!" He said bye, and I closed the door.
  4. I looked at Christofer, whom looked kind of annoyed. "If you want to change into pajamas, I'm sure you can borrow some of Alex's," I suggested. "No, I think I'll just drive over to my place and get my stuff. Wanna come?" I shrugged and nodded. I threw on a sweater before going back into Christofer's pick up truck. He took a sharp turn onto the main street and sighed. "Do you remember anything else about...us?" He asked. I thought long and hard. "No. I guess that memory potion thing worked thoroughly." Christofer's grip tightened on the steering wheel and then relaxed. I put myself in his shoes. I said we were hopeless in love. I can never imagine having the person I used to love not remember me at all. "Can you tell me about it? About us?" I caught a faint smile on Christofer's face. "What do you want to know?" I bit my lower lip and said, "What was your first impression of me?" He laughed. "I thought you were a dork. A cute one, but a dork. You had your nose buried in a different book every time I saw you."
  5. I laughed and hit him on the arm lightly. "Shut up. What was our first date like?" Christofer smiled into the distance, like the memory was playing in his head. "I took you ice skating and then we started walking around the outlet. Eventually we got bored and so we went to Party City and purchased a Mrs. Pacman costume while I draped a red table cloth over me. Then we started walking around, me chasing you like in the video game while you were yelling out, 'WOCKAWOCKAWOCKA'." I burst out laughing. "I did not agree to that." "Yes, you did. And then the security told us to stop because we were being public disturbances. So then I took you to Dairy Queen and then I ended up kissing you right here, in this car, when I was dropping you off at your house." I looked down. "That's cute." I looked out the window and saw dry flat lands. "You live awfully far." "We're almost there, promise. Gumbo will be happy to see you."
  6. The sound of Gumbo's name got me excited. It's like a wave of memories washed over me with that dog. I started having flashbacks with him. Bits by bits, but it was a start. "I have a question now," Christofer said. "Where does our relationship stand now?" We locked eyes for a moment before he laid them back on the road. "I...I don't know. Considering I don't remember our history, I guess we should start over as friends." Out of the corner of my eye I saw Christofer flinch. I felt like I just stabbed him and threw him in a pit of fire. Up ahead there was civilization. There was a small strip of buildings with a few restaurants, clothing shops, and an Albertsons. We drove for a few more minutes and then we drove through a gate where a bunch of condos stood. He parked in spot #248 and then we got out. I followed him throughout the many condos and then went upstairs as he stuck his key in the lock and opened the door. I stepped in and then was automatically greeted by a dog, licking my hands and nuzzling my leg. I closed the door behind ,e and bent down to pet Gumbo. My eyes got watery a little bit as the dog made a whimpering sound and then pressed its head against my shoulder for a few seconds.
  7. "Feel free to snoop around. I'm just going to get some stuff," Christofer said as he disappeared in what I guessed was his room. I stood for a bit just petting Gumbo. I walked around the living room in curiosity. The walls were a dark grey, the floor was a carpeted black, and the decor was consistently made up of red, white, and black. Christofer's got class. On the tea table were multiple pictures in frames. I picked one up and it was a picture of a family. I could easily recognize Christofer and I assumed who the other people were. The second picture was of him and Gumbo which made me smile. I set that one down and picked another one up. It was of him and me. He was giving me a piggy back ride and I was kissing him on the cheek while he was laughing. Suddenly a shock of nostalgia went through me, making my legs feel like Jell-O. I set it down and then saw another picture in the back. I took it in my hands and it was of James, Christofer, and another guy that I didn't know. He was really cute with wavy black hair curling around his ears, bright green eyes, and a creamy complexion. One name popped into my head. Ash. I set the picture back down and prowled around the coffee table where CD's were sprawled all around. I sat on the couch and fingered through each album, murmuring the artists under my breath. "Snow Patrol, Drake, Cider Sky, The Fray, Adele, Bruno Mars..." I stopped when I heard Gumbo growling.
  8. I put the CD's back down and glanced at Gumbo. He was standing by the patio door, staring at something, his teeth bare. "Christofer...?" I called out. I felt a presence behind me and I turned around quickly. Nothing. Then Gumbo started barking, which made me panic. "Christofer!" I called out, even louder. I saw a shadow move from the corner of my eye, but refused to believe it was real. Gumbo followed me into Christofer's room. On the bed, I saw a black duffle bag, and I also noticed the closet door open. Then I heard a deep laugh. That surely wasn't Christofer.
  9. Gumbo sniffed his way into the closet so I followed him hesitantly. I searched my hand against the wall looking for the switch when a hand covered my mouth. I was about to scream when I recognized the familiar smell of pomegranate. Christofer removed his hand and sunk me deep in the racks of clothing where Gumbo already sat, panting. "Are we playing Hide and Seek?" I whispered. "What's happening?" Christofer hushed me and then motioned me to stay there while he got out of the camouflaged space. I was about to go get him when Gumbo bit onto my shirt, strictly making me stay. "Michael, what are you doing in my condo?" I heard Christofer ask briskly, with a hint of amusement. Michael's overwhelming voice boomed through the condo saying, "Just stopping by to ask why you saved the girl. And now she's here with you, right? You should know better, kid. You were always Oath's favorite—which I never understood—but when I get the girl it'll be different. He'll probably kill you. And I'll be front row to watch."
  10. Then I heard a loud thump and more noises coming from outside of the closet. I tried leaving again, but Gumbo's bite on my sweater was way too strong. "Gumbo, we have to help him!" The dog wagged his tail and perked up his ears and then made his way out of the hiding spot. I tried following him, but he turned around and snarled at me, warning me to stay there. Who does this dog think he is? I heard more rattles and shakes outside and I heard Gumbo barking. "Damn dog!" Michael yelled. A few seconds later I heard a yowl from him and then a few more thuds and noises. I heard footsteps coming closer and closer to me, and I was too afraid to peer out to see who it was. I held my breath in as the silhouette stopped in front of me.
