An Untitled Story Quiz

Oddly enough, I was inspired to write this by a painting in a nail salon. I don't yet have a title for it, but I was hoping you could help me with that.

If you have a title suggestion, I'd be happy to hear it. Include it in your comment. I'll mention the person whose title I use in the next part of the story. Enjoy!

  1. As I sat down to breakfast with my wife, I thought about Matthew. It had been months since I'd last heard from him. I liked to think he was happy with his new life, and was simply too busy to write. "I miss him too," said my wife, Rona. "But he's found a home now." I began to reply when I was interrupted by someone knocking on the door. This was odd, since we didn't get visitors often. I hoped it was Matthew, perhaps with a lady friend to introduce to us.
  2. It was not Matthew, but a man who bore a striking resemblance to him. The same face and brown hair. But older, and he didn't have Matthew's deep blue eyes. His were light brown. He spoke as though it pained him to do so. "Is this the home of Henry Baxter?" he inquired. I nodded and invited him in. He took a seat at our table. He was wealthy, judging from his attire.
  3. I gave the man a warm smile. "I take it you're Matthew's father," I said. He nodded. "How is he?" The man, still unnamed, became quiet. His expression grew dark. My smile gave way to a confused expression as I asked,"Is he all right? I haven't heard from him." A minute passed in silence before he blurted,"He's dead. Poisoned."
  4. I sat in silence. He handed me a box with letters in it. "I found these," he said. "Someone didn't want him talking to you. I read them, I hope you don't mind. The funeral is in two weeks. I've already made arrangements for your travel. We'll leave tomorrow. I have to go now, but I'll meet you at the train station at noon tomorrow." He rose and left.
  5. I sat there for an eternity with Rona, wondering how this happened. Matthew wasn't liked by a lot of people, but he didn't have any enemies. The answer must be in those letters, I thought. So I read the first one.
  6. "Dear Henry, I apologise for not writing sooner, but these past few weeks, everything has been so hectic that I couldn't. I have eighteen years of catching up to do with my father. He's very intelligent and dignified, but he's kind as well. I hope that one day we'll be able to visit you. The servants are kind. There are two gardeners, a cook, a chauffeur, and two maids. One gardener is married to the cook and is also the father of one of the maids. The cook is a sweet, older woman who insists that I call her Anna. Her husband also demanded that I call him James. Their daughter is Rose, a sweet, innocent girl with red hair and blue eyes. Kind, just like her parents. Almost to a fault. The other gardener is my age. Tall, tan, and dark-haired. Very charismatic, and he seems to be a good friend of the chauffeur's. He introduced himself as Anthony. The chauffeur is quite the opposite, but I suppose opposites attract in some cases. He is shorter, pale, blonde, and has grey eyes. He is more shy, but he did tell me his name was Richard. The second maid told me to simply call her Miss Greene. When I asked her first name, she didn't tell me initially what it was. After plying her a little, however, she said that it was Myrtha. An odd name, but beautiful, as befits someone as attractive as her. She has green eyes, fair skin, and wild raven hair. If it were socially acceptable, I would have flirted with her, but I am apparently the son of a noble. It wouldn't do to flirt with a servant. Besides, she didn't seem interested. Ah, well. I'll write soon. -Matthew"
  7. I began to cry. I never thought he would die this way. I thought he would die after living at least forty more years, if not more. But he was only eighteen! He and I had fun in this bleak town, but he never truly was happy. We'd talk about leaving and living in the country. But I couldn't afford it. He couldn't, either. Until recently, that is.
  8. When his mother had died, she'd given him a note. I'd never read it, but it told him that his father was an earl named Maxwell Witham. He immediately sought out his father, and had apparently found him.
  9. After crying for half an hour, I tried to sleep. I only succeeded in wasting time. Sleep eluded me. I opened another letter. This one was dated a week later. "Henry- The most unusual thing happened. I was walking in the gardens, and I found Richard and Anthony there, laughing and talking. They almost looked like they were in love, but I've been known to read too much into things. They are close, after all. I've also caught Rose looking at me several times, but it's most likely because I'm a newcomer. I must admit an attraction to Miss Greene, but it may merely be infatuation. She is lovely, after all. This household is certainly interesting. You should visit sometime. Give Rona my best. Matthew" I heard his voice while reading the letter. At least, in my head. I put the letters back into the box and collapsed from sheer exhaustion- both emotional and physical. My last thought before going to sleep was, "My god, Matthew, what did you get yourself into?"
  10. That's all for now! Let me know what you think.
