My Result: The Inland North - You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop."

    Ummm, no. No one asks me where I am from when I speak and I have never called Coca-Cola 'pop'.

  • I was born and raised in Soutern California. I speak eloquently and WITHOUT any distinct accent (LOL!)I do think I have a pretty good voice for radio or TV which is what a Midland accent has. That was what I was told I had. I am not from the midwest south, or northeast. They are the ones with the funny accents, especially New Jersey and Massachusetts.

  • To everyone saying they got Midland and aren't from there, just to clarify if you read the explanation they gave, you would see they say it means you DON'T HAVE an accent so you could be from anywhere really. You speak normal proper english. The creator probably should have called midland something else to avoid confusion. I got Midland but my girlfriend got The West and it's totally dead on!

  • I'm from South Texas, my parents are from Cleveland and Central Kansas and you put me from Philadelphia???!!! I've never even been to Philadelphia, although I have lived in the Boston area and in Santa Monica, before returning to Houston and Texas. (And, by the way, Texas has SO MANY accents!!) Totally off, and then the star rating do-hickey didn't take my rating but made one up for me!

  • Your diagnosis was incorrect. Nobody has ever mistaken me for Wisconsin or Chicago. Discerning listeners can pick up my slight Pittsburgh accent. I don't speak as heavily as most Pittsburghers but have lived out of the are for more than 20 years. Words like wash (pronounced with an R by many Yinzers)or creek ( aka crick) are dead give aways as are the Steelers (aka Stillers).

  • I want to rephrase my earlier comment so that soc typos will not be misconstrued as ignorance. : ) 80 percent off the mark on me. I have never lived in Philadelphia and grew up mainly in the South and have lived in California for the past 15 years. I learned to speak from my mother and father who were educated in Colorado and Oklahoma. I lived in New Orleans and Venezuela. Poor grammar and vowel pronunciation are not the same as dialect differences. Dialect is more to me a matter of air passage, soft palette and hard palette emphasis, speaking from the diaphragm, air burst intensity and many more factors. I am so tired of people stigmatizing Southerners as bigots, morons, unable to speak English and lacking credibility and Californians as airheads who talk like Valley Girls. Thank you though for providing the forum for me to say this... : )

  • Philadelphia must have paid the creators of this "quiz". While I have been to the City of Brotherly Love, I am a fourth generation Californian. Born and raised in San Francisco. All education in California. Parents both born and educated in California.

    What does this mean? People in Philadelphia want to live in California so badly they have begun to talk like us.

  • Northeast??? Interesting. I spent a lot of my summers in Fairfield Beach, CT, where my paternal grandparents had a summer house on the beach. But,I was born on the Panhandle of Texas, raised all over the US and part of the world as an Army Brat. My friends tell me I have a Southern accent with a slight North Carolina twist to it. All in all, your quiz would never come close!

    Wow... I'm from South Central Pa...not the west...I don't think my accent was a choice in the quiz lol. The thing is, I have a hearing loss, so it was hard to figure out many of the words in the quiz haha. But nice try anyway! :)

  • most of the comments on here help me understand why so many nations hate americans. wheather redneck, northern, southern, yuppie, stuck on stupid or stuck on smart(every bit as dangerous as stuck on stupid,a good example is try to convince a group of smart people of this, stuck on smar theory) or otherwise, a majority of these comments show how retarted peoples thought process is. Lighten up and brighten up. THIS COMMENT IS TO ENLIGHTEN THE IDIOTS(IF THATS POSSIBLE, ABOUT 11% WILL WILL GET IT) and make the rest say hmmm yeah. That being said, I find this quiz accurate(as a Chicagoian)without any other factors like 'my mom is from here' or 'my dad was stationed in a gay bar during Nam'or 'I'm a moron and can"t see it from where I am sitting', etc., etc. I scored 100% inland north and I say soda despite I said pop as a child, becauce it is propper

  • Midland. I've always wondered what accent I have, and I could never figure it out. I live in Fall River, Massachusetts. Around here we call what people in America know as the 'Boston accent' the 'Fall River accent' (Fall River is very close to Rhode Island, so we connect more with Providence than Boston). However, I never caught the 'Fall River accent' like most of my friends.

    I loved the quiz, though. Very well constructed. The best on this site, I'd say.

  • Amusing but inaccurate. "INLAND NORTH" is interesting since most people think I am from England upon first meeting. My mother (born and raised in upstate New York) was always mistaken for a native of Ohio. I do not refer to carbonated drinks as "POP", I call them "SODA".

    When I tried to rate this with 4 stars it thanked me for giving it 8 stars!! What a joke.

  • Philadelphia and Boston. Exactly on the mark, although I left the East Coast for California some 48 years ago at age fourteen. I had thought my accents were long gone, but they're obviously still there. All this time I thought I was speaking standard American "anchorman" English! But, hey - do marry, Mary, and merry sound the same to you?

  • Martin, you are from England and your closest U.S. accent was from the northeast. Thats because this country was settled there and the language is the least diluted. In particular the upper mid-atlantic and the nyc, connecticut and new jersey area have residents that are mostly still big users of consonants.

    Of course there are many accents in England but as in the US clarity is more necessary when the population is large and diverse.
