Lavender and Maeve

Maeve frowned. She reached up and cupped Lavender’s cheek. ‘You sure?’
-
Lavender plastered a fake smile. “Yeah, it was just a stupid question, don’t worry about it.”
-
‘It probably isn’t stupid. You can tell me,’ Maeve said.
-
Lavender didn’t say anything for a moment. “Why are we still hiding that we’re together?” She looked down. “I know you said you don’t want to be ‘problematic’ since you might be queen one day, but hasn’t everyone already made their opinions about this by now?” Once the words left her mouth she wished she hadn’t said them. “Sorry, I sound so selfish, wanting you to be public about us. It’s your reputation, I shouldn’t have a say in it.”
-
Maeve was quiet for a few moments. She rolled over slightly, watching the fire crackle and fill the silence. ‘You know how people are,’ she mumbled. ‘People don’t like… lesbians.’
-
“If they’re going to hate us, they probably already do.” That wasn’t a very comforting thought. Lavender hated the idea that strangers hated her for no reason other than the fact that she had the best girlfriend in the world.
-
‘You’d be surprised at how dense people are,’ Maeve grabbed her hand and played with it. ‘I don’t want people to harass you.’
-
They already are. Lavender looked down at her hands, letting the fire be the only sound in the room for a moment. “I love you.” She whispered. “I hate feeling like that’s something I have to hide.” She knew the two of them being together wasn’t a very well kept secret, but she hated that they have to be a secret regardless.
-
‘I love you too,’ Maeve mumbled, pecking the back of her hand. She rolled back over, head still in her lap, and looked up at her. There were another few moments of silence. ‘My brother got with his boyfriend a couple weeks ago,’ she said quietly. ‘And the press found out about few days ago. They’re… y’know. Not nice about it. I don’t want that to happen to us.’
-
Lavender gave a small nod. “I’ve heard about them. It’s a big news story.” That obviously didn’t help either of their nerves. “Makes sense. I’m sorry for being so pushy about it.” Lavender looked down at their hands.
-
‘It’s okay,’ Maeve mumbled. She felt bad that Lavender had to deal with the press. She was used to it, but Lavender wasn’t. ‘I’m, uh, sorry you have to deal with that,’
-
Lavender grabbed both of her hands and used them to pull her up gently, so she could look Maeve in the eyes as she spoke. “I’m just not used to them. I’ll learn how to handle them, don’t worry.” She promised herself she would. She couldn’t keep spiraling like this, for Maeve’s sake.
-
‘You shouldn’t have to,’ Maeve said, avoiding her gaze. She let go of her hands. ‘I, uh, have to go. I’ll see you later.’ Maeve disappeared.

(Aw shucks I forgor 💔
Poor Lavender)
‘You shouldn’t have to,’ Maeve said, avoiding her gaze. She let go of her hands and took a step back, rubbing the back of her neck. ‘I just wish… Nevermind.’
