You don't multiply first in this case. Going from left to right. If division comes first, then it's division. -

you do the parinthesis first: 12
Then from left to right because you dropped the (): 48/2= 24
Multiply: 12 x 24 =288 -

MD-Multiplication, Division
AS- Addition, Subtraction
48/2(9+3)
Parentheses first: 48/2(12)
Now the question is to divide first, or to multiply 2 by 12. Multiplication and division are equal, so you do whatever comes first in the equation: Division, 24(12)
Now just multiply: 288.
Hope that clears it up. I actually didn't know about the equality until a few months ago.
