OliveOwl NewbieGoogle it Meg or if you have a text book look it up in there but I recommend Google.
-
I have a textbook but it's not in there!! And I dontthink google will have the answer but I'll try.
-
Yay the power of google!!!

OliveOwl NewbieHey Lauren long time no chat.

Hi killer!

SilverBlueMoon NoviceArgon is a noble gas, meaning that all of its elecrton shells (is that what they're called?) are filled.
That means that it will not gain or lose valence electrons, since it has the perfect number. And becase of that, it will not bond with any other element. It is on the far right of the periodic table, making it part of the most stable family of elements. -
SilverBlueMoon NoviceWell, let's see, Oxygen has 16 electrons, meaning 6 valence electrons. (the ones that bond with others.)
There cannot be more than 8 electrons in a shell. Um...
That's the explanation, now we just need someone to provide the answer.
Gah, I'm a physics and biology nerd, not a chemistry nerd. -
DOA, I have anwsers.

They share 2 pairs because they both want to have 8 valence electrons, or the outermost electrons. they have 6 by themselves, if they share 2 pairs then that will give them 4 shared and 4 that are their own which equals 8.
No it will not. The reason not being because of the higher atomic number but because of the filled up or stable outer energy level.
