Since the predicament over losing the house was over, my father had told me to begin unpacking my belongings. Still, weeks after, my suitcase rested by the foot of my bed, neatly zipped and untouched. There might still be a possibility of escaping with Phoebe, however slim the chances. When my father asked about it, I simply stated that I'd get to it later.
My stomach had been doing flips ever since this morning. It was the day before her wedding... I would really be losing her... I always knew this day would come, I just never though it would arrive so soon. -
When I arrived home, my mother had selected what seemed like an endless number of dresses. They took about an hour to narrow down. I finally chose a beautiful gown with blue roses embroidered onto it, and lace sleeves.
When she handed me the guest list, I was surprised to see Aaron's name on the list. My father had probably invited him out of spite.
I held back tears as I left the room. -
Sorry for my absence. I had to eat dinner.
"Aaron," my father called, "I need you to go into town to run some errands." He walked into my room, handing me a list of things to do neatly scrawled in his boxy handwriting.
I glanced up at him, my eyes dead and my mouth set in what seemed like a permanent frown. "I'm not in the mood..." -
It's fine. I had to sweep the porch.
I cried and cried until tear ducts had been squeezed dry. "I need to get out of this house.",I thought.
Ignoring my mother's calls to come to the living room to look at flowers, I walked outside and started to walk toward my favorite cafe. Their peppermint hot chocolate always cheered me up. -
"I'll give you some cash so you can head over to that cafe downtown. I know you love their special coffee grounds or whatever," he flicked a few dollar bills my way. "But either way, you're going." With that, he left my room, nudging my suitcase with his foot on the way out. "Unpack that. It's been sitting there for too long."
I picked up the money and the list. I set out, heading towards the cafe. I hoped, prayed for one last chance to see Phoebe before the wedding... Just one last chance to formally say goodbye. -
After I'd ordered my drink, I went back to a table by the window. I saw a familiar face walking down the street towards the cafe. It was Aaron! I was so overjoyed, that I ran out of the cafe into his arms, half crying, half muttering,"I missed you."
-
I quickly wrapped my arms around her as tightly as I could. "If only words could express how much I missed you..." I shook my head, pushing the sadness away. I ran a hand gently through her hair, caressing her cheek with my thumb. I stared into her golden brown eyes, wiping away her tears.
-
"I wanted to come a see you, but I couldn't get away."I said, kissing his cheek.
"I also didn't want to make you any sadder by coming to see you."
I placed my head on his chest, and listened to his heart for a moment. -
"Why would I be sad to see you?" I asked, looking down at her.
-
"I don't know. I'd probably just never let you go." I tightened my arms around him for emphasis.
-
I smiled and kissed her gently. "That wouldn't be physically possible, Phoebe," I murmured, a sense of humor tugging at my words.
-
"Are you absolutely sure of that?"I said with a bit of a smile.
-
"Not absolutely..." I glanced into her eyes, smirking a bit. "But it would be awfully hard."
-
"But could I at least give it a try?"
