  1. What is your age?
  2. What is your gender?
  1. The next day after school, Coach Dennis rewarded his team with ribbons. “Alright you people. For getting first place for Maline Middle is Miranda. Come on up girl and get your ribbon.” Several people clapped as she got up to retrieve her ribbon. He gave out four other ribbons for the other people who made top five for Maline Middle. He then rewarded three people that he had seen cheering. But then he stopped, paused. “Now there was one person that stood out the most to me,” he announces. A lot of heads turned to the top runners. “This person has been rewarded the gut-it-out ribbon. This person, I also saw doing something extraordinary. They cheered, for the other team!” he exclaims. “Erin, you come on up here, everyone give your teammate a hand!” You turn your head to Ryan. He was grinning and he whispered, “Good job.” As you get up, you feel all eyes on you. After that, Coach Dennis orders five laps from the team.
  2. After practice, you run an extra two laps. You jog to your Mum’s car with your backpack slung over your shoulder. “Hey Mum, can we go to the library?” You finished reading the book last night and you wanted to return it. You felt around in your backpack for the two dollars that you had carried around with you for like three years already. You brought out the untouched pouch, fuzzy purple money pouch that had two quarters and five dimes in it. “Why do you need to go to the library?” your mum asks. “I hafta return my books and pay for the damages from last night’s rain,” you tell her. “Oh, honey, I’ll pay for the damages,” your Mum coos. “No, I’ll pay for them,” you murmur, remembering the book slipping and falling splat into the mud puddle. You shook away the memory.
  3. “By the way, what were you making yesterday?” you ask your Mum. “You mean the one that you left on your chair?” she asks. “Uh, yea,” you say sheepishly. “WELL, if you had tried it then you would’ve known how lovely it tastes. It’s called mushroom and bean fry. I met this fine man at work, he’s new,” she says casually. You could catch a little bit of dreaminess in her voice. Your heart sank. No boyfriend, no boyfriend… But your Mum didn’t say anything else. You just KNEW there was going to be a boyfriend.
  4. She parks the car as you grab the chemistry and transformers books. You burst into the library to see Natalie the librarian smiling at you through her green eyes. Jessica was standing behind her with a stack of books to check in. You flash a smile back at her. You go up to the desk and return the transformers book. “How are dear?” she says. “Uh, I’m fine ma’am,” you reply. Jessica’s pretty head turned at your voice. You glance back at Natalie nervously. “Oh no dear, no need to address me that way. Call me Natalie,” she says with a tone of warmth in her voice. “Uh yea, ok,” you say. “But uh… I accidently ruined this chemistry book in the rain and I’d like to know what the damages are,” you continue. Jessica’s eyes were burning a hole through your skin. She takes the book in her delicate hands and pauses to think. “Hmm… oh yes! That young man yesterday… the one you made the card for? Chris was it? Oh he came in and paid for the damages,” said Natalie.
  5. You stare at her almost in horror. You sneak a small glance at Jessica who was glaring so hard at you. She was scarier than any street thug… “Oh don’t worry dear, it wasn’t that much. He explained it to me and said that fifty cents should cover it. Oh but it looks like the damages only require ten cents, silly boy,” she says. She hands you two nickels, two dimes, a nickel and five pennies, forty cents. “I trust that you’ll bring this back to the boy?” she asks you. “Uh yea, I will Natalie,” you reply. “Okay then, I’ll see you again… at five, eh?” said Natalie. You stare at her. “Oh I know,” she tells you. You give a last glance at Jessica and Natalie. Warm green eyes and cold steel green. Natalie looked like an older version of Jessica. You run out. Before you get out, you heard Jessica’s last words… “Hey Grammy could I…”
  6. As you get out of the second set of doors, you hear footsteps behind you… A delicately done fingernailed hand rested on your shoulder. Your heart jumped. You stopped. She turned you around. It felt like you were being caught by the cops. “So… what’s this I hear? You’re meeting with Chris every day at five? And he paid for your book damages? Does he owe you or something? Answer me,” she growls in a smooth voice. Your voice was gone. Your cheeks were hot pink. Her eyes shifted your Mum’s car. “I’ll see you at five then…” she mutters shoving you aside. “…deal with the brat later…” she grumbles as she steps back inside the library. You take off running to the safety of your Mum’s car. You sit in the back. “What was that about?” she asks. “Uh nothing,” you reply. To your relief she nods and asked no further questions.
  7. Around 4 o clock you had to study with Ryan at your house, at 5 o clock you had to study with Chris. What a complicated life, you think.
