  1. ~ Alex tried making his way to the gate as fast as possible, but his armpits were seriously on fire. Crutches were such a pain in the ass. He'd call for Sam and Gumbo, but he didn't want to risk the ogres or the morphers coming at him. Knock on wood. Whoops, too late. He heard a groan behind him. Alex looked behind him and saw one of the blue, ugly ogres gawking at him as if he was a Thanksgiving turkey. "I don't know assume you know where the little boy's room is?" He asked, trying to stall. The ogre tilted his head to one side like a cat would do when it doesn't understand something. Alex glanced at the small tree in the planter and chucked it at the ogre's head. Yeah, like a tree would do anything life threatening. When the tree hit him, the ogre made a weird sound at the back of his throat and plowed ahead, almost running Alex over. But the ogre kept kept on running. He glanced back at Alex, but then continued on forward, towards the math classrooms.
  2. Alex figured to follow the ogre. Maybe he doesn't like his meals unhealthy. It wasn't hard keeping up with the ogre considering that the school was empty and he was this big, blue blob, causing small earthquakes whenever he took a step. Alex hid behind a beam and peeked at what the ogre was doing. The creature was kneeling down on the ground, next to a bunch of ashes. He picked some of the ashes up in his hand and let it run through his fingers. "Brother?" The ogre sobbed quietly. Alex felt someone tap him on the shoulder. "Aw, now I feel bad for stabbing the thing," Sam said with a sigh. Alex took another look at the scene. It took a step back as the ashes made a tiny tornado and sunk into the ground. "Brother, no!" Its blue first pounded into the ground, begging for his brother back. "Oat! Oat! Oat!" The ogre scream as he pounded his feet back to Mrs. Bonet's classroom.
  3. Alex leaned on his right crutch. "Did you guys see that?" Gumbo scoffed and said, "No, I just stared at this lovely office window for the past couple of minutes." Sam felt horrible. "Should we go then?" Alex asked. "We obviously can't handle ourselves right now." Gumbo glared at the two of them. "Are you going to give up like that in the Core?" Alex shook his head. Sam didn't say anything since he was forbidden to go anyways. "We have to defeat the morphers," Alex stated. Gumbo nodded approvingly. "Then let's go. You too, faerie." Sam staggered behind everyone else. He couldn't shake off the guilty feeling he was experiencing. He turned back around to look at the spot one last time and saw a pile of dust, peeking out from under the tree branch. He scooped up the ashes and put it in his pocket. "Don't worry, my mom can wash my pants again. She has some really nice detergent that'll get the smudge off immediately."
  4. "Here we are. French," Alex announced. The other ogre wasn't outside anymore. And Alex guessed that "Oat" was the call for Oath. "Ready to be attacked by a dozen of morphers?" He asked nervously. "Until the death," Gumbo replied, which didn't really help with Alex's nerves. He put his hand on the door knob and found the strength to turn it. He flinched, ready to be ambushed, but there was nothing. The room was still eerily quiet. "I guess our work here is done," Sam said relieved. "We shouldn't be so sure," Gumbo said. He took a step inside and still nothing happened. His eyes darted from side to side. Gumbo took careful steps towards the cabinet. He knew Lacey was the Keeper of the Gateway so he didn't dare try opening it. He put a paw on it and expected a sort of alarm to come on, but nothing happened. He went back to the others with a wry smile. "Let's tell her the good news."
  5. ~ I woke up, still tired. I put my alarm clock 30 minutes before 5 so that I could look presentable for April. Maybe she'll like my shoes and forget all about me kissing Zac. Yeah, I doubt that'll happen. I draped my legs over my bed side and rubbed my eyes. I wondered how Alex, Sam, and Gumbo were doing. Hopefully they didn't encounter much trouble at the school. I checked my phone to see if Mom or Dad left any messages saying that their phone died, or there wasn't any time to call back. I put my phone down disappointed. I got out some clothes and put them on nonchalantly. I went in the bathroom and redid my hair to my liking. Then I grabbed my satchel and put my phone, iPod, money, and a book to bring with me. I went downstairs and told Auntie Lisa about my meeting with April. "Alright, sweety, be careful. Oh and can you get me a frappacino? Vanilla or mocha would be suitable, thanks." I nodded my head with a small smile and then shut the front door behind me.
  6. I opened the garage and searched in the back for my bike. Starbucks was just a few blocks away, and I could use some exercising. Dad never really taught me how to ride a bike, but I figured it shouldn't be so hard. Basically all you have to do is pedal...right? I put my satchel in the basket of my satchel and steadied myself on the pedals. I started pedaling really fast since I was afraid if I stopped I'd fall and die. I balanced myself and caught my breath. They should really have radios on bikes. Or at least signal lights. I parked my bike in one piece and hung my satchel over my head. I pushed the door open and the aroma of foam and caffeine hit my nostrils strongly. I saw April sitting down alone at the high tables. I ordered a blueberry muffin before approaching her so that I had an excuse to leave the table if things got messy. I wasn't looking to fight with April. I really liked her as a friend and I was hoping to convince her that I had no feelings for Zac whatsoever. I scraped my chair back and took a seat across from her. She was caressing her coffee cup in her hands and pursed her lips when she looked up at me. "Hi," I said. She didn't reply.
  7. "April, you can't ignore me if you want to talk this out," I commented. She sighed and sipper her coffee cup, the steam making its way to the ceiling and disappearing. I heard a door shut and then saw Zac emerging from the boy's bathroom. His hands were still damp from washing them, and he tensed his shoulders when he saw me. He took a seat awkwardly and folded his hands together on the table. "Explain," April finally said. I glanced at Zac and quickly focused on a napkin. "Okay, so I'm just going to tell you the truth. I had a little crush on Zac. And it was before I knew you were his girlfriend. Besides, he was leading me on with all of that flirting so I couldn't just ignore it. That night at the party, I don't know, my mouth just took over. My mind knew it was wrong, but my lips had another thought. The point is, I'm sorry, April. I really, truly am." There was a long pause.
  8. I glanced at Zac and he had a bland expression on his face. Suddenly he fell to the ground and blood poured out of his mouth. I screamed and then suddenly he was gone. Everyone in Starbucks was staring at me while April was giggling. "April, what the hell? Was that you?" She nodded innocently. "False alarm," I called to the audience. I sat back down and sighed. "Mind reader too?" She gripped on to her coffee cup and a little tighter and nodded. I sighed. "I'm sorry." There was an awkward pause. My muffin was ready so I went to get it and took my precious time walking back. "April. I really am sorry. My mouth, it just—" "I forgive you," she cut off. "Zac's a jerk. He wanted to break up with me." I didn't know what to say. I said it in my mind though, hoping she overheard. "I want to go to the Core with you."
  9. I think she overheard a little too much. "Why?" She took a long sip of coffee. "Because I have to save my dad. The UPA was on a business trip and during a mission, Oath ambushed and captured most of them. My dad was one of them. I'm sure of it. I have to save him." My biggest fear was coming true. Oath has my parents too. "How much do you know?" I asked her. "From your mind right now, you lost your memory, you're slowing gaining it back, Christofer was your boyfriend, and Oath got him and you don't know what to do." Wow, she's good. "You can't go with just you, Alex, and a dog. I'm more experienced than Alex, and I've developed more. I can control minds and form illusions like what I did earlier. You need me if you want to make it one night in the Core." I hesitated and took a shaky breath. "Fine. But you better be ready to go at a moment's notice." April grinned. "Alright. I'm going to pack, bye." She hopped down from the table and left the coffee shop like everything was normal. Things just got more complicated.
  10. I finished my muffin and decided to read my book for a little bit before I left. About 14 minutes in, I heard a door open and a cool breeze swept in. Annoyed by this, I looked up to see who it was and saw Mr. Irvine. I covered my face with my book and dared only to show my eyes. He looked around the shop like he was looking for someone. He went up to the barista and ordered a coffee. Note to Self: remember Auntie Lisa's frappacino. Mr. Irvine strided over to the book case and picked up an old looking book with an ivy green cover. He slipped his hand into his pocket and then revealed a piece of paper. He stuck it in the book and then placed it back on the book shelf casually. The barista called his name—Jonathan—and he took his coffee and left the shop.
  11. Well that wasn't suspicious at all. I waited for a few minutes to see if anyone would retrieve the paper. Nobody disturbed the book and nobody looked like a suspect. I got up and walked over to the bookcase. I picked up a tattered old copy of the Sorcerer's Stone and skimmed through it to make sure I put on a good show if anybody was watching. I put it down and searched the titles of books until I came across the ivy green one. I grabbed the book next to it, a fairly new copy of Gone by Michael Grant, and then set it down and grabbed the green one. I opened it up and the slip of paper almost fell. I pulled it from the case and opened it eagerly. I gasped and almost dropped the book. I tucked the paper back in and put the book back in place. I ordered Auntie Lisa's frappacino and then darted back home on my bike, worry creasing my forehead.
