Beautiful Secrets Part 26

Announcements: Well, this part is more focused on Nick this time, so maybe you all will start liking somebody other than Alex and Christofer. But at this point I really doubt that that's a possibility. :P

Alex Hart has jet black hair, icy blue eyes, a sexy collar bone, and lean muscles. Nick Martinez is more of the athletic type with his nice tan, brown hair like Zac Efron's, gray eyes like a light rainfall, pearly white teeth, and a pretty amazing body. Sam Mitchell is the adorable, quirky, shy one of the bunch with his strawberry blonde hair, green eyes like a freshly mowed lawn, and that one dimple that always gets to you. Zac Anderson is Mr. Seductive. He has dark brown hair, big brown eyes, a nice lean body, and smile that makes your legs go wobbly. Christofer Henderson and his mysterious ways eggs you on to learn more about him with his coal black hair, strange hazel eyes, distinct jaw line, and fit body.

  1. We were silent at first, but my curiosity killed it. "Nick, why are you always looking out for your older brother? What exactly is his deal?" Nick's eyes flicked quickly to me and then back to the road. "I couldn't go to the carnival that night because I had to visit my brother who was in the hospital again for drug over dosage. He came back to live with us, hoping to get better, but after a week or so, he was back to his usual ways: partying, drugs, drinking. It's all he did. My parents finally had enough and gave up on him. But I never lost hope. I made sure he was okay and never did anything more stupid than he's been doing. Of course, until the party. He promised me he would be under control for me—for my birthday. He said I didn't need to worry. I was dumb for believing him.
  2. "His friends egged me on to drink more and more and then you put me to sleep and I woke up thinking he was out again. Then he never came home. Maybe he passed out in an alley, or in a bar, but I was sure he'd come home this morning. And then the hospital called. My parents went there right away, but I decided to talk to you first. Good thing too, because I really don't want to face him alone." Punctured lung, broken ribs, and a broken arm. That could have been anybody else in this small city in California, and it had to be Nick's older junkie brother. This was definitely Karma catching up to me. I didn't want to say anything about Xavier because the things I wanted to might have offended Nick, so I just kept quiet. Once parked at the hospital, Nick and I went through the doors and the hospital stench hit me once again. Nick asked the receptionist about Xavier Martinez and she pointed down the hall to the right in Room 504. I could tell Nick was nervous, so I interlocked my hand with his to reassure him. I saw his shoulders tense, but then relax as he gave me a slight nod of thanks. We stood outside Room 504, just staring at the plain, light blue door. "Ready?" I asked, giving his hand a squeeze. "Ready." He reached for the handle and turned it.
  3. We walked in and saw Xavier in a hospital bed with a tubes sticking out everywhere, a cast on his arm, and an air tube on his face. A nurse was looking at x-rays and turned around to face us. "He'll be fine for now. He's awake and can probably talk for a little bit. I'll leave you guys alone." The nurse skidded out and closed the doors. Before interacting with Xavier, Nick turned to his parents. I had a feeling this was going to get a little messy, so I took a seat away in a corner. "I want you guys out when I talk to him," Nick said to his parents.
  4. Nick's mom—whom was crying before—started weeping again while his dad asked why. Nick looked offended. "You guys only care now that he's hurt again. You guys only came because I was in the room when the hospital called. And you guys only stayed with is because you didn't want to lose your jobs. I heard you guys talking a few nights ago. Talking about skipping out on Xavier and taking me with you. How could you? Your first born." Nick's dad stood up and if I didn't know better it looked like he was about to back hand Nick across the face. "How dare you say that. We love Xavier. We took him in our home, we clothed him, fed him, tried doing out best to help him. But look at what he's become! A junkie who has no priorities whatsoever!" Nick glared at his mom and dad, his hands clenched into fists. "You loved Xavier. You loved him before drugs claimed him. You loved him before he first got high. You don't love him anymore. You say you did your best? Is that what you call giving up now? Because I remember me helping him with his hangovers, me making him dinner. I remember me loving him, not you guys." Nick's mom was sobbing now, clinging onto her husband's sleeve. The voice Nick's dad used was hostile when he replied. "Is this what you call taking care of him? Look where he is now." Nick flicked his eyes towards Xavier and back at his parents. "At least I kept trying. Now go. Or else you'll lose another son."
  5. The threat took a while to kick in, but eventually Nick's parents left the room. I felt really awkward because it felt like I have intruded on a private family drama. Nick pulled up a rolling chair next to Xavier's bed and held onto his hand. I've honestly never seen anything so beautiful in my life. The love Nick had for his brother is incredible. After all the things Nick puts himself through for him, he stays. Nick was sniffling, and that's when I realized he's been crying. I rolled up another chair next to him and squeezed his knee, like he did whenever he tried reassuring me. He laughed and said, "Sorry about that whole scene back there. I swear, I'm more manly than this." I grinned and kissed his cheek. "Little Nicky here has a girlfriend now?" Piped up Xavier, whom I forgot was awake. I blushed while Nick shook his head nervously. "Friends," he clarified with a slight smile to me. "How are you feeling?"
  6. Xavier shifted uncomfortably in his bed. "It's been hard, bro. I know I promised you, and I'm sorry." Nick nodded. "I heard what you said to Mom and Dad. Listen here kiddo, I love you with all my intoxicated guys. I hope you know that. I'm fighting here for you. You may not know it, but you're helping me. Little by little, day by day, I'm getting better. I feel it in my heart and in my soul. I'm getting better little bro; don't worry about me." Nick smiled slightly and held Xavier's hand to his forehead and closed his eyes. I wonder if he was possibly reminiscing about the times where things were better. Maybe when they were kids, playing in the backyard or fighting over a toy. Anything better. I heard the door open and the nurse soon reappeared. "We're going to take more x-rays and scans, so I'm afraid it's time for you guys to leave." Nick nodded and then said goodbye to Xavier. "Um, I hope you get better," I mumbled out before the nurse closed the door on us.
  7. I heard my phone beep so I dug into my pocket to see a text message from Alex. 'Sam explained everything. Auntie L. wants you to come home fast.' I put my phone away and glanced at Nick's parents who were sitting down in the waiting room. "I have to go. I kind of have my own family crisis to deal with," I said, trying to sound sympathetic and empathetic at the same time. Nick nodded and smiled. "I'll drop you off. Thanks for coming. It really meant a lot to me." I returned the smile and put my arms around Nick as we sat there and hugged.

  9. After Nick dropped me off, I waved him goodbye from my driveway and then went up to the front door to ring the door bell. "Shut up, I heard you!" I heard Gumbo scold. Well, jeez. The front door opened and I was greeted by Sam and Gumbo. "You don't have to be so mean," I said to the dog, sticking my tongue out. "_______," I heard someone say from a distance. I looked up and saw Alex on crutches with a smile on his face. He made his way to me and we tried hugging but it was way too awkward so I kissed him on the cheek. "I'm glad you're back," I said to him. He scoffed. "Of course you are. Everybody is." I slapped him gently on the arm as I saw Auntie Lisa approaching from behind him.
  10. She looked awful. It looked like all of her usual energy was sucked out of her by a vacuum. She was fiddling with her fingers as she approached me. She lied, yeah, but I could never stay mad at her. I can't believe she thought I was. I embraced her hard. "I understand why you had to do it. Tell me what happened." Auntie Lisa smiled slightly and tucked some hair behind my ear. "You've grown up so much. Here, let's sit down and I'll fill everybody in."
