  1. As you got up the next morning, it was quite early. You decided to check on Josh. As you entered the boys' dormitory, you saw Josh perfectly asleep in his bed. You didn't wake him but instead got dressed and prepared for your first day of learning. You smiled to yourself as the time passed, it was 7 o' clock already so this must mean people will be awake. You went downstairs, into the Great Hall but there wasn't anyone there. You saw Mr Filch cleaning the floors and as you passed him, you stopped and said, "Good Morning Sir." He looked at you, clearly surprised because no one gave him that much respect. You bent down and played with Mrs Norris and smiled at him, "You have a wonderful cat here Sir. Well best be off, bye!" as you skipped down the corridor. Not watching where you were going, you bumped into someone, your books flying along with his. You hit your head pretty badly with his chest as you fell. You groaned, "I'm sorry, I really am," as you scrambled to help him pick up his books and yours. When you got up, you smiled, "Hi. I'm Saphira Mendler." His grey eyes met your almond green eyes. He smiled cheekily, "I'm Cedric Diggory." You apologised, "Cedric, I'm really sorry about this. It's my first day and I couldn't sleep so I decided why not waste time wandering around the castle." He laughed, "Same. Hey would you like me to give you a tour?" As you walked with Cedric for about an hour, you found it rather enjoyable that he knows about muggle stuff, like you. You asked, as you headed to the Great Hall with him for breakfast, "I think I have just Divination, Transfiguration and Care of Magical Creatures today. If you want, you can join me in the Library later?" His eyes brightened, "Sure. It's a date," and he left you and went to his table.
  2. You smiled as you joined the Gryffindors at their table. Josh was engulfed in a conversation with Seamus and Dean. You tackled him into a hug as you greeted him morning. He smiled, "You didn't look for me?" You nodded, "You were sleeping like a baby panda in winter." Dean and Seamus laughed. As you grabbed a piece of toast from the table, someone came up to you. It was Harry Potter. He asked shyly, "Would you like to join us?" Your heart beat rapidly as you nodded and held your hand and guided you to his friends. You stuttered, "I-I'm Saphira M-Mendler," to Ron and Harry because you and Hermione were already acquainted. Ron smiled through a mouthful of food. You waited till he swallowed for him to say something. He said, "I'm Ron Weasley." You smiled, "So what classes do you have today?" Ron and Harry had the same classes as you but Hermione had way more. As Ron and Hermione bickered all the way up the stairs, you asked Harry, "I heard about the dementor incident, are you alright?" He sighed, "I am. Just Malfoy and his friends are making a big deal by always harassing me with it." You put a hand on his shoulder, "Just ignore them. They're not worth your time." He smiled at you and your heart fluttered. It was true that you had a crush on Harry Potter ever since you were small but you never imagined that you'd be going to school with him; it was a dream. You took a seat not too far from Ron, Harry and Hermione in the Divination class.
  3. After a while other students started to gather inside. Unfortunately enough, Draco Malfoy took a seat on the same table as you. You tried your best to avert your eyes from him but you felt his eyes burning into your back throughout the class. It was a ridiculous class though. The Professor went on to say that you all will progress to the crystal ball when they are done with fire omens. And she said something strange about, "˜one of our number will leave us forever.' You tried not to make anything about it but she then instructed everyone to divide into pairs and drink from a cup until the dregs remain, swill these around the cup three times with the left hand and turn the cup upside down on it saucer, wait for the last of the tea to drain away and then give your cup to your partner to read. Apparently, you had to interpret the patterns using certain pages from the book, "˜Unfogging the Future.' You found this rather silly though because no one could possibly predict the future. You grudgingly did what you were told but before you could read Draco's cup, Professor Trelawney predicted that Harry had The Grim.
  4. You tried not to laugh though, because it was simply ridiculous. The Grim was a giant spectral god that haunts churchyards and it's the worst omen of death. You sighed and rested back in your seat, not bothering with reading Draco's cup. Draco looked at you because you didn't even say a word to him. He asked, "Do you despise me or something?" You shook your head, "No, why?" He said, "You've been acting really weird with me from the first time you met me." You cut the pretence, "Maybe I don't like you Malfoy. Got your answer? Now just leave me alone." You didn't mean to be so harsh but after all, you didn't want to be associated with a Malfoy. You couldn't hear what the rest of the class was talking about because everyone was talking in their own little groups. Suddenly Professor Trelawney said, "I think we will leave the lesson here for today. Yes...please pack away your things..." You tried hard to catch up with Harry. You said, out of breath, "Harry, don't believe her. I don't believe there's a Grim and honestly, you looked as though you saw something. If you want, I'm here to talk," as you made your way to Professor McGonagall's classroom. Harry sighed and whispered in your ear, "I saw a giant dog like the Grim on the night I escaped the Dursleys'..." and he went on to tell you the story.
  5. You and he barely heard what Professor McGonagall was saying about Animagi but you already knew they were wizards who transform at their will into animals. You stared at Harry, concerned throughout the class and weren't even watching when she transformed herself into a cat with spectacle markings around her eyes. She asked everyone what's happened and Hermione explained about the Divination class. When Professor McGonagall asked, "Which one of you will be dying this year?" You realised that this sort of thing happens regularly with Professor Trelawney. Harry finally said it was him and she explained to Harry that Professor Trelawney has predicted the death of one student a year since she arrived at this school and none of them has died yet. Apparently seeing death omens is her favourite way of greeting a new class. You sighed, still looking at Harry and mouthed next to him, "It's okay," but he wasn't reassured. You held his hand and he smiled at you.
  6. At lunch, though before you sat with your friends, Josh came up to you with a brown haired boy, smiling. The boy introduced himself, "I'm Oliver Wood," with a cute Scottish accent and a heart melting smile. You almost forgot who you were but Josh said, "She's Saphira, my best friend." Oliver shook your hand and you smiled. You finally caught your words, "I'm in Third Year, along with Josh." Oliver sat down with you and said, "I know, he's trying out for Gryffindor's Quidditch Team, let's hope he gets in." You hit Josh playfully on the shoulder but couldn't help but blush when Oliver smiled with you. You had a quick lunch as you hurried over to Cedric. "Hey Saphira," he smiled. You grinned, "Cedric, I was wondering what time you wanna go to the Library for?" He shrugged, "Is half five good enough?" You smiled cheekily, "Yep, well I'll see you later, bye." As you walked with Josh to Care of Magical Creatures, he said, "I heard you and Cedric Diggory have a date tonight." You laughed, "It isn't a date. I asked him to study with me in the Library." Josh scoffed, "Right, yeah. Just don't do too much snogging," and he walked off to join...Malfoy? What? What was going on there? You walked up to him, "What's going on?" Malfoy smirked, "Josh, you're in trouble..." You snapped, "Shut up Malfoy." Josh said, "Let's not talk about this now. I'll see you later." It was weird though because he's a Gryffindor. Since when Gryffindors hang with Slytherins? You noticed Hermione and Ron weren't speaking to each other but you shrugged as you and Harry walked to Hagrid's hut on the edge of the Forbidden Forest. Hagrid made you all gather around and told you to open your books. Malfoy asked, "How?" You snapped, "I thought a smart guy like you would know. Oh wait, you're probably part troll." His face flushed with anger as the Gryffindors laughed at him and you suddenly felt bad but didn't show it. Hagrid looked a bit crestfallen, realising no one was able to open their books. You muttered, "Aren't you supposed to stroke it?" Hagrid said, "Yeh've got ter stroke "˜em," and he showed you all.
  7. Malfoy sneered, "Oh how silly we've all been! Why didn't we guess?" Hagrid said uncertainly to Hermione, "I- I thought they were funny." Malfoy said, "Oh tremendously funny. Really witty, giving us books that try and rip our hands off." Harry snapped quietly, "Shut up Malfoy." Malfoy smirked, "Aww Potter, scared of dementors?" You said, "Why don't you take a cactus and do you-know-what with it? Leave Harry alone," and you turned Harry to the front. It was already bad that Hagrid was looking downcast and you knew that Harry wanted his lesson to be a success. Malfoy made a retort about a dementor and fainting but you whispered into Harry's ear, "Don't let him get to you." Hagrid went to get something in the forest and when he came back, he had the most bizarre creature you had ever seen. It had hind legs, and tail of horses, but the front legs, wings and head of what it seemed to be a giant eagle, with cruel, steel-coloured beak and large brilliantly orange eyes. Hagrid roared happily, "This is a hippogriff. Buckbeak." He was beautiful, just like Hagrid said. No one wanted to go nearer but Hagrid said to you that hippogriffs are proud, easily offended and always wait for the hippogriff to make the first move. It was polite, he said. You have to bow first and if he bows back, you are allowed to touch him and if he doesn't, well Hagrid didn't say anything except back away.
  8. Everyone but Harry stepped back when Hagrid asked who wanted to go first. You glanced at Malfoy, as Harry made his way to Buckbeak and his eyes were narrowed maliciously. Hagrid said to him that he had to keep eye contact with Buckbeak. You realised how nervous Harry probably was. Harry then bowed and after a while, Buckbeak bowed back at him. When he did that, Harry was put on top of Buckbeak and he flew with him. When he came back, Malfoy was looking at him with pure venom. You patted Harry on the back and said, "Well done mate." Hagrid smiled, "Good work Harry!" Malfoy stepped forward, "I want to go next." I scoffed, "Good luck. You'll need it." Malfoy snapped, "Shut up Mendler." You rolled your eyes, but then felt bad. You've never been like this to anyone. You seriously needed to stop. You watched as Malfoy bowed and Buckbeak bowed back but then Malfoy drawled, "This is very easy. I knew it must have been, if Potter could do it...I bet you're not dangerous at all are you?" he said to the hippogriff, "Are you, you great ugly brute?" You closed your eyes, waiting for what came next because you should've guessed Malfoy wouldn't listen to Hagrid. Malfoy let out a high pitched screamed and over-reacted. He screamed, "I'm dying! It's killed me!" Hagrid said, as he had gone very white, "Yer not dyin'!" as he carried Malfoy to the hospital wing. The Slytherins began to shout about Hagrid. When Pansy Parkinson said, "They should fire him right away!" You retorted, "If they do, I swear to Merlin I will set your hair on fire." Dean snapped, "It was Malfoy's fault!" Pansy ran up the marble staircase to see if he was okay. You rolled your eyes, "I'm sure he's fine and if he's making a big deal about it, he's lying and he just wants Hagrid fired. I hope they don't do anything to Hagrid though, or Buckbeak," you finished to Ron, Hermione and Harry. Classes were done for the day and you decided to clean up and get ready for the Library. You met Cedric outside your common room as he said, "I heard people think we're going on a date." You groaned, "I know and I'm sorry, they're just so unbelievable here." Cedric smiled, "I know but I wouldn't mind if we're going on a date." You widened your eyes, "It's only been my first day here!" Cedric laughed, "I was only harassing you." You poke him in his stomach as you raced to the Library. Cedric came in the Library a few seconds after you. You teased, "Slowpoke, you are." He put a hand over his heart, pretending to be offended, "I am not." You giggled, "At least you don't sparkle in the sun." He smiled but you knew he didn't know what you were talking about. You sighed as you took a seat, "Ced, I have to do some crappy things for Divination, so I'll get that done and over with. Will you help me with my Transfiguration though? I wasn't paying attention because I had to help Harry with something." Cedric looked at you and poke your cheek, "Of course, my little one." You ruffled his hair, "I am not little!" Cedric smiled at you and said, "If you need me, I'll be right by your side, literally." You laughed and nodded, doing your Divination homework.
  9. As you got started on your Transfiguration homework, your stomach grumbled. Cedric noticed and ask, "You're hungry?" You shrugged, "It can wait. If you wanna have dinner, I'll come in a bit but I want to finish this." He nodded and when you were done, you got up and went to the other shelf to put back a book. You didn't notice that you were in Cedric's way until he came up to you, his nose inches away from yours. You smelt the peppermint on him and looking into his grey eyes made you melt. Before you did anything stupid, you moved away from his way. He straightened himself and asked, "You ready Saph?" You nodded, still mesmerised by him. You both walked back to the Great Hall in silence. As you parted, you gave him a hug and said, "Thank you. It helped. I wouldn't have done my homework if you weren't there." Cedric shrugged, "Same here. Maybe we'll do that again sometime." You nodded and said, "Bye." You watched him as his friends greeted him and made your way to Josh and Oliver. Josh muttered, "Hi," and Oliver smiled, "Hi there. Had fun on your first day?" You shrugged, "Some parts were bad, some parts were good. I can't say for sure. How about you, you had fun on your day back?" He replied, "I guess it's been okay. I mean, it's my last year and I have to prepare for Quidditch and examinations. I'm going to miss this place, for sure." You nodded, swallowing some food. You asked, "What position do you play on Quidditch?" He flashed you a smile, "I'm a Keeper." You choked and drank water. He asked, "You alright?" You laughed, "Yeah I just...nothing, it's something from earlier today I remembered," you improvised.

Oliver nodded and asked, "You and Cedric are a couple?" You coughed, "What?!" Oliver flinched, "I'm sorry, it's a rumor that's been going around the school." You shook your head, "Cedric and I aren't a couple and whoever told made up that should know better than to make up rumors about me, rather than more important things." Oliver asked shyly, "You want me to accompany you back to Gryffindor's common room tonight?" You kindly refused his offer, "I'm sorry Oliver, I have something I need to do. Maybe tomorrow?" Oliver looked hurt but he managed to say, "Yeah sure." You finished your dinner and headed to the hospital wing to see Draco Malfoy. As you pushed the door open, you saw Pansy Parkinson by his side. You quickly said, "I'm sorry," and turned to leave but Draco said, "It's okay, Pansy was just leaving," and you saw her brushed past you. You slowly entered, embarrassed. You quickly apologised, "Draco, I'm sorry for how I treated you. I shouldn't have and I don't even know why. I guess it's because Harry's my friend and I'm protective. I just don't know but I do know that I am truly sorry and I would like for us to be friends," as you sat on his bed next to him. Draco pushed a couple strands of your hair behind your ears and whispered, "I'm sorry too." You were alarmed, "Why are you sorry? You have no reason to be." Draco said, "I am sorry, if I ever hurt your feelings. I just have this Malfoy reputation to put up with because of my father but if I ever gave you a bad vibe, I'm sorry." You smiled, "Actually, I feared to get close to you because I've heard about your father and how cruel he is. I'm sorry I judged you," tears streaming down your face. Draco sat up, wiping your tears, "Please don't cry. Just please. I know you're sorry, I'm not angry." You slowly nodded as your tears subsided, "Friends?" Draco shook your hand on it, "Friends." You got up, "It's late and Madam Pomfrey will probably scold me if she sees me here this late. Goodnight Draco, I'll see you tomorrow." You left quickly and ran to your dormitory, crying.
  11. Bad memories were coming back as you began to cry; childhood memories that you never want to relive. Hermione came up and saw you crying, she asked, "What's happened Saphira?" You shook your head, trying not to cry, "Nothing." Hermione hugged you, "You're shaking Saphira. Are you okay?" You nodded, "Yeah I am. Just...gimme a second." You stopped crying after a while and choked out, "Where's Josh?" Hermione just shrugged and you nodded, going downstairs to look for him. He's the only one that knew of your childhood and he knew how to calm you. When you entered the common room, you saw him and some blonde haired girl snogging. You felt as though you were hurting inside. No wait, you were. You always sorta liked Josh ever since but never wanted to show it and now he's snogging a random girl? You let yourself cry on the steps but then someone came up to you and asked, "Are you alright?" You looked up, wiping your eyes, "I am." The boy said, "I'm Neville by the way. I saw when you came back crying and just now too. Are you sure you don't want to talk about it?" You didn't know why but you felt comfortable around this Neville. You forced a smile, "I'm just shocked, I guess." Neville sat next to you on the stairs, "Having a bad day?" You nodded, "So it seems. I'm just so messed up and the one person I count on is harsh with me. I'm not even sure if it's because I'm with Harry, Ron and Hermione or he just changed." Neville silently commented, "He doesn't deserve you if he's ill-treating you." You smiled, "Thank you Neville but he's been my best friend since I knew myself." Neville shrugged, "I was just saying." You nodded, "I understand. Hey Neville, you mind me joining you?" Neville shook his head, "No one ever asked that. You can join me if you want, I can show you all about the tricks of Herbology." You giggled, "That'll be wonderful," and later that night, you spent it with Neville and his Herbology book. At the end of the night, it was almost midnight, you and Neville parted and you said to yourself, "I found a new true friend: Neville Longbottom."
