How Well Do You Know Your Character (for authors)

It's important for us writers to really know our characters, as if they were real people in our actual lives. That's what makes them appealing to our readers.

I hope this quiz will help you to judge if you've developed your characters enough and are ready to dive in and start writing. Use it as many times as you like!

  1. If I was going to plan a surprise party for my character, ideas would immediately come to mind.
  2. I know my character's idea of the perfect day.
  3. I know my character's idea of the worst day ever.
  4. I could design my character's phone case, phone wallpaper, bedroom, bed comforter, personalized license plate, and license plate frame.
  5. I know my character's political, moral, social, and religious views.
  6. Shopping for my character and buying them presents would be stress free, cuz I'd know exactly what to get.
  7. Real people, whether they be friends, strangers, acquaintances, famous people, etc., and/or characters from other books, movies, etc. have reminded me of my character before.
  8. If my character and I ran into each other, we'd be able to carry a conversation on what's going on in their life, what they've been up to, how they're feeling, etc.
  9. I know my character's biggest insecurities.
  10. I know my character's greatest fears.
  11. I know how my character feels about their past, their present, and their future (future plans, if they're traumatized, anxious, depressed, content, excited, apprehensive, etc.).
  12. I could tell anyone right away if I'd be friends, enemies, strangers, acquaintances, etc. with my character IRL and how close we'd be.
  13. When describing my character, I can't really get past "s/he reminds me of this famous person/person I know/character from a book/movie/etc."
  14. I can rattle off my character's medical records, both physical and mental. I know what vitamins s/he takes. I know what ailments plague him/her on a daily basis. I know how mentally stable s/he is. I know how much pain s/he's in every day.
  15. I could tell you exactly how good my character's hygiene and health choices are and give specific examples. I could also tell you how s/he feels about those facts.
  16. I know what my character doesn't want anyone to find out about him/her—his/her biggest secrets.
  17. If someone mentioned my character and another person didn't know who they were, I know exactly what the first person would say to describe them.
  18. I'm worried that the bulk of what I know about my character is racial/gender/other stereotypes, and/or my character's personality is basically a trope or "type" i.e. angsty teen, goody two-shoes know it all, genius kid, cranky old lady, etc.
  19. I know how my character would respond at nine PM to a close friend: "Hey, me and few other guys are gonna go hang out in (city at least an hour away). Want in?"
  20. I have a hard time clearly distinguishing my character's personality from those of the other characters in my book and/or other miscellaneous characters I've wrote before.
