In a crazy situation, which would be the first thing you ask?

What?
When?
Why?
Or How?

EX: my answer would be Why? As in why it happened.

Mine would be "what." It encompasses almost everything, really.

What's happening? What understanding do I need to have of this situation before I can proceed?

"What?" Because that's just my normal response to anything that I don't know. Like "What don't I know?" or "What's going on?" are the first thoughts. Then it usually goes into how when I'm mystified about the events that led to it.

Because if you say "how did this happen?" I think you would most likely get an explanation from the very beginning of the story leading up to the present.
