DAMN IT ALL.
Bunny sat quietly in a wooden chair, eyes trained on the floor. She hardly noticed the tears in her eyes anymore- they never seemed to go away. But they were picking up considerably now.. She clenched her fists against the feeling, unable to see clearly at all anymore. -
Penelope yawned, sitting alone on a bench as the rest of her class chatted happily outside, trading happy news about things in their lives. She sighed. Morons.
-
Bunny wiped at her eyes for the tenth time that hour, dripping more tears onto her lap.
"Why don't they stop....?" she muttered. She was certain that couldn't be right. Why did she exist if only to sit in misery, with water filling her eyes? She sniffed, and got up to wander the floor of her little room again. -
She watched as the bell rang, signaling them all back into the building. Despite her "condition," she was a remarkable writer. She actually had the feelings to write from. She perked up a bit, knowing English was up next, and she could write.
-
Bunny searched her room for the thousandth time, prepared fully to find nothing, like she always did. This time was different, though..
She had grown taller now.
She ran her fingers gently over the wall as usual, but this time, unlike any other, they encountered some sort of cold material. She paused, felt some more, and found it to be a doorknob. She tried it, but found it locked. -
Inside the room, she sat down and waited for the rest of the class. Her teacher had written the same topic on the board for the billionth time- "Your Best Memory."
She sighed, watching the others begin in a synchronized manner. The memory would simply be what happened previously to them. Their entire lives were one happy memory. One happy, insignificant memory. -
Thoroughly intrigued now, Bunny pulled at the knob harder, over and over until it broke off completely, and the door swung open easily. She stared out at the logn white hallway just outside, and took a hesitant step out.
One hesitant step turned into another.
And another.
And another, less hesitant one.
And so on until she was running in a full sprint down the hallway, not sure what she expected to find, but praying it would be better than this. -
The others continued to scribble, while Penelope carefully chose a topic and began. Her assignments were often confusing to the teachers. They had never known such incredible feelings.
-
Bunny ran past several people, none of which recognizable to her. They all looked at her, some shouted, some chased after her, but she ran on. Soon, a large door loomed in front of her. Without further thought, she opened it and ran out, and was gone.
-
The papers poured in from her peers. She wrote on and on, until the yellow pencil's graphite broke under the pressure of her hand. She groaned and lifted the fragment to complete her conclusion sentence in scribble letters. She turned it in with a grin of satisfaction.
-
Bunny continued running, becoming more and more aware of the people chasing after her. They were getting closer. But this.. this was odd. There was grass under her feet, cool and soft and just so nice to feel on her skin... She ran faster. She had been right. This was better. Even now, she was beginning to feel something.
What was it? A warm feeling creeping into her chest, replacing a cold that had been there as long as she could remember. -
The class ended a few minutes later, and the students were dismissed. She collected her bag from her locker and left among a swarm of other students. Finally, freedom.
-
Bunny kept running until she entered a place full of tall buildings and people and huge blocks of metal rolling around. The place seemed so odd, like a fantastical dream.
"Don't wake me up this time.." she murmured to herself, and ran toward the most crowded place she could find to take cover from the people. There were several people flooding out of one particular building, each looking about her age. She ran into this crowd, shovign past protesting children, and ignoring the concrete scraping her bare feet as she went. -
Penelope's eyebrows knitted together in confusion as others were pushed aside. A girl, a little shorter than her, was pushing through the crowd. She grabbed the girl's arm. "What are you doing? Who are you?"
-
Bunny stopped, eyes wide, and stared at the girl who had stopped her. She felt the cold start to creep back into her chest with each step the people who were chasing her took, and pulled at her arm violently.
"Let go! Please let go!" she pleaded, ignoring the girl's questions.
