Ms. White arched an eyebrow at Mason. "Your brother managed to get here on time and write three chapters of his novel in the time it took you to saunter down the hall."
Mason shrugged and stepped aside. "I ran into Aubri. She's new and she was lost. I helped her find her way through the labyrinth that we call the hallway." It was clear that Mason was testing her, but quite frankly, Ms. White hated the paperwork involved with disciplinary action. She nodded and let them into the room. -
Aubri followed close behind Mason, feeling protected.
Arielle glared angrily at her sister. This was common. -
"Nice of you to join us, Mason," Matthew said, shooting him a sideways glance. He honestly couldn't care less how his brother spent his time, but being late to class was just an annoyance to them all.
Mason smirked triumphantly and plopped himself down onto an orange beanbag next to his brother. "Yup. Sure thing, Mattie boy." -
Aubri sat onto a forest green beanbag beside Mason, trying to keep her distance from Arielle.
Arielle continued to glare at her sister. -
Ms. White returned to the front of the room, glancing at the clock. "Well, we don't have much time left for today. Since Mason didn't get here on time, he can take his brother's place in sharing by making up a poem on the spot."
Mason glanced up at Ms. White, an expression on his face as if to say, Are you kidding me? -
Aubri bit her lip, trying not to smile.
Arielle rolled her eyes. -
Ms. White motioned for Mason to stand. He did so, slowly. "Alright. A poem? From the top of my head... s---," he mumbled. His brother glanced at him, his expression one of pure amusement.
"Erm..." -
Arielle glanced at Matthew once again, and then at her sister.
-
Mason furrowed his brow, thinking. Matthew shook his head before starting to write again. His brother glanced over at Arielle, then Aubri. As soon as his eyes set on her, he received inspiration.
"Like that of the sun,
Your light brightens my day.
Your smile melts my pain away.
I dream of a tomorrow
Much like yesterday
Only with something special
A heart
A soul
You.
Reality strikes,
A cruel slap to the face.
The flesh left throbbing, red, and angry.
I cannot obtain my ultimate fantasy,
For a roadblock stands so rudely in the way."
His eyes never once left Aubri.
"Breathe, just breathe.
Breathe and everything will be fine.
Shut your eyes and think of me,
Think of how happy we could be.
Ignore the chills of tomorrow
And the icy bitterness of the past.
Right now, in the present
It's just you and me.
I hope to make this moment last." -
A tear flowed down Aubri's cheek as she looked into Mason's dark eyes. She smiled through the tears, her cheeks a deep dark pink. "Beautiful." she whispered, and her blonde sister rolled her eyes.
-
Mason grinned at Aubri as he sat down once more.
-
"That was amazing, Mason.. You are a really good writer."
-
Mason shook his head. "Nah, Matthew's the writer. I'm the artist."
-
Aubri smiled, and wiped her tears away. "Your an artist too?"
-
"Fixing to major in graphic design, yeah."
Ms. White smiled. "Thank you for that lovely presentation, Mason. Class is dismissed."
