Feelings are felt by all living things. If it has a conscious brain and a nervous system, it can register whether it's in pain or not. Hence good and bad. As brains develop more they can register different levels and variations of those two basic roots. Happiness comes from Good, so does pleasure (the act of receiving good), pride (knowing you've done good), and joy (extreme good). Also developing Bad emotions too. Pain (bad at it's most basic form.) Guilt (doing bad), and anxiety (extremely bad).
All emotions are based on a primal survival instinct and have developed off of that simple principle. "Ouch that hurts, don't do that." And "That feels good, I like that." -
Because you have the confidence to say you are.
