No, he was designed for comic relief. Very brief comic relief.
Out of all four movies, I only cherish the first one, because of the nostalgic value of watching it in theaters as a kid. Not to mention the drama/heart/soul/substance it brings. The sequels were okay-ish, but they lose that charm. The fourth film was super disastrous and confusing. Way worse than Shrek 4! -
