Definitely medieval. Princes, princesses, knights in shining armor, who wouldn't want a scenario like that?
The story could be like The Princess Bride movie, or something like it.(Maybe Shrek, since it parodies fairy tales). -

If you love the movie so much, you could use it as a basis for your story, yet making it your own style. :)

I like Princess Bride also. It's not a bad book or a movie. Big Fish is a good one too.
