6% survival rate... That's all that made it. The eye was supposed to be our next great discovery. An anomaly in space. A cloud of strange gasses full of incalculable energy. We were the pioneers. We were supposed to come back heroes. But we weren't prepared for what we found when we got there.
We were only two days in to the eye when we were hit by a strange shock wave. A burst from what we assumed was a planet hit our ship and scrambled our systems. Everything from life support to gravity shut down in a matter of minutes. That's when we started venting atmosphere.
The gasses outside were thin. Faint wisps of grays and tans that wafted in to the ship through the faulty systems. We had no way of stopping it.
The egg heads determined that it was breathable, so most people let their guards down. They figured it was a lucky break. Perhaps too lucky. I wasn't one of those people. A few of us didn't trust this s---. We kept our breathers on at all times.
Eventually we started to get systems back on. Lights, gravity, water... And yet strangely the engineers could never get atmosphere back on. And communications never reestablished.
As time went on, the people who were breathing this stuff seemed to eat less. They breathed less. They slept less. And yet they seemed to grow stronger.
It was three weeks before we had our first "incident". One of the tech boys was found in his room eating his bunk mate. The disemboweled boy was still crawling around the room trying to pick himself back up when people came to investigate. The techy never even flinched. He just kept on eating all the way up until the moment they put a bullet through his head. What worried me the most was that none of them seemed to really care about the poor boy who was dying on the floor. They all just seemed to stare at him, as if they were conflicted. It wasn't until one of the other people with masks on suggested they put him out of his misery that they seemed to react. Even then, they opted to take him to the medical wing instead.
Over the next couple weeks, events like this seemed to happen more and more often. The bodies were never seen. We were promised they were taken to medical wing, but nobody ever saw anyone go in, or come out. I personally escorted the first boy, and I went back every day to check on him.
I started to notice strange things about his condition as well. Firstly, he seemed to have new scrapes on him every day. I guess I figured that I just hadn't noticed them before. But as time went on, they seemed to get worse. The stitches holding his stomach closed seemed to be cut more and more frequently. The doctors became more seclusive. It wasn't until I made a "Surprise" visit unannounced that I saw what was really going on. One of the medics stood over him, their fingers in the gaping wound from his reopened stomach, fishing around for anything else to take. The boy was already dead. I shot the doctor before he had a chance to notice me.
I don't remember much of the next few weeks. I had locked myself in my room. Shut off all lights. And refused to answer for anything. I remember hearing the occasional scraping noise. A scream from down the hall. The scratching and clawing as what used to be people tried to get in through my room. The worst part was when my oxygen supply started to dwindle. I tried to ration it as much as I could, but it eventually faded.
I felt strong. I felt alive. I felt hungry. I remember trying to get out of my room, but being too worried about how hungry I was to remember how to unlock my door. I remember waking up one morning, my knuckles bloodied and raw, and feeling suddenly very tired. I opened my door without much trouble and found shreds of flesh and meat scattered across the entire ship. The occasional bloodied pulp or vomiting crew member dotting the corners of rooms or decks. When I reached the deck, I found that we had passed through the eye. We were on the other side. -
