Year 10 Carbon Chemistry

Carbon compounds make up over 90% of all chemical compounds and many make up the basis of living systems. Carbon is most commonly associated with hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen sulphur and chlorine in these compounds. Many of these elements are hugely abundant in our bodies and hence it is an important area of study for us scientists...

So how much do you know about how carbon atoms associate in the world around us and within us? Are you a carbon genius? Take the test to find out how much you know and perhaps some new information along the way!

  1. The study of carbon compounds is also known as
  2. The type of bonds formed between carbon atoms in a carbon compound are called
  3. The general formula for an alkane states that for every carbon atom present(n), there will be how many hydrogen atoms present?
  4. For the homologous series of alkanes, what kind of bonds are formed between carbon atoms?
  5. Using the knowledge that for an alkene there are two times as many hydrogen atoms as carbon atoms, name the alkene which has 12 hydrogen atoms
  6. Alkenes are "unsaturated" hydrocarbons. What kind of bonds would we expect between carbon atoms in an alkene?
  7. Carbon compounds featuring a triple bond between two carbon atoms is known as an
  8. The structure of some hydrocarbons can differ even though they have the same formula. Different molecular forms of a hydrocarbon are called
  9. When there is more than one position a double or triple bond can be positioned in the molecule it can form various different isomers. How many isomers are possible in the hydrocarbon butene?
  10. The position of a double or triple bond in a hydrocarbon is often included in its labelling. A butene atom of the following structure (hydrogen atoms omitted) C-C=C-C would have theisomeric labelling
