Who Do You Side With in the Greek Civil War?

The Greek Civil War started in 1943 due to infighting between communist and a variety of non-communist resistance movements and ended in 1949 proving to be as destructive if not more than the German invasion.

You find yourseld in the first phase of the civil war (1943-1944) and must make the hard choice of picking a faction to entrust the future of the country with.

- The centrist wing of the Liberal Party (National Liberalism, Republican)
- The progressive wing of the Liberal Party (Social Democrat, Republican)

Should the monarchy be allowed to return to Greece?
- Yes, the King is a fundamental part of the Greek nation
- No, the royal family is a British puppet and would turn Greece into a semi-colonial state
- No, royal inteference in democratically elected goverments in the past has caused more harm than good
How important is fighting the Axis Occupation for you?
- Not at all, on the contrary Greece should fight with the Germans against Communism
- Very, we need to make the occupiers pay for their crimes
- The Germans are on their way out, we need to conserve our resources to attack our political rivals
What should be done to those who collaborated with the Germans?
- They need to be heavily punished for their treason
- While the worst offenders should be executed, many of these collaborators share anti-communist sentiments and could prove useful in the fight against bolshevism
- They should all be trialed and punished accordingly
- They have done nothing wrong and should be fully pardoned
What treatment do the minorities in Greece such as the Cham Albanians and Macedonian Slavs deserve?
- These minorities proved themselves to be traitors by planning to secede and need to be expelled
- Those found guilty of treason need to be punished heavily and the rest should be assimilated
- All minorities have a right to self-determination and autonomy
Which goverment has the most legitimacy?
- The Axis backed Hellenic State as it controls most of Greece and polices it
- The Allied backed Goverment in Exile as it is the legal succesor to the prewar Greek nation
- The socialist Free Greece as it is the only goverment in Greece that has been liberated by the Greek people themselves
- While the Goverment in Exile has it's faults it is worthwile to work with it as it provides some potential for a democratic Greece
What is your economic plan to help Greece recover from the war?
- By attracting foreign investments and ensuring a totally free market on sound business lines
- We need to impose tarrifs on foreign products and establish goverment run unions for workers of the same profession to organize while promoting unity between all social classes
- The basic means of production need to be controlled by the workers. While the goverment should intervene in the economy indirect taxes and debts need to be erased
- Only through a planned economy and the abolition of private property can Greece organize a recovery
Who should Greece align with in foreign affairs?
- The Axis, Germany is still dominating in Europe and we have much to gain by participating in their war effort
- The Allies, they have the required capital to help us rebuild and have promised to liberate our country in it's entirety
- The USSR, The Soviet Union is a champion of the anti-imperialist cause and is more than capable to protect our people
- Stalin's instructions have often worked against the communist cause in Greece. We need to build up relations with Tito's partisans to secure an ally in our effort to establish an independent socialist state
Would you accept a peace settlement between the Communist and Anti-Communist forces in Greece?
- Never! We must not show any cowardice against the reds
- Yes, such an agreement would avoid a civil war and protect democracy in Greece at the same time
- Such a treaty would be extremely one sided and all true communists should go against it
What is your view on the prewar 4th of August Regime of Metaxas?
- Many of Metaxas' domestic policies were great however his foreign policy of neutrality was a failure that helped Britain more than Greece
- Metaxas was a tyrant who ruined the democratic system and Venizelos' legacy
- Metaxas should be applauded for his monarchist stance and the stability his regime brought
- Horrible, Metaxas was a reactionary who supressed communism
