What kind of parent are you?

Would you like to find what kind of parent you are? It's important to know because you can help or hurt your child's chances in life through your parenting style.

This quiz features four different types of parents. Of course there are more. However, this quiz is a good way to determine your level of comfort and trust with your child.

What do you do about vetting your child's friends?
- I like to get to know them, their parents and their academic record before approving them
- I will try and be as friendly as possible so I can get a take on what they are like
- They can choose their own friends, just don't expect me to talk to them
- Whoever they want to hang out with is fine by me
How would you react if your child asked for a pet?
- No, they take up enough room in the house themselves already
- I might allow it if they could prove beyond doubt that they could be responsible for it
- I might allow it once we have had a thorough family discussion about it
- Of course, I can always look after it if they get bored
- We already have a pet
What sort of curfew do you impose on your child on weekends?
- Strictly 10 PM, not a second later
- It's flexible, depending on what they want to do
- They don't have a curfew, I'll always be staying up for them
- They can come in when they like, provided they don't wake me
Your child is brought home by the cops after committing a minor misdemeanor. What's your reaction?
- You're grounded for the foreseeable future
- You're grounded until you can explain yourself
- You're grounded until the weekend
- Why do you give me all this trouble?
What's the deal in your household when it comes to siblings sharing?
- I have a strict rota which obviates any argument
- We have regular family meetings to discuss a fair system
- None of my children have to share, I make sure they each have one of everything
- Pretty much survival of the fittest
Your child is 16. They want to go on vacation with friends instead of you. What do you do?
- It's out of the question, they can do that when they're adults
- I will suggest that the friends come with us, maybe staying in a separate cabin/hotel room
- I'll let them go and pay for a good hotel so they will be safer
- If they can pay for themselves, then good luck
How much input into general family life does your child have?
- None. My house, my rules
- Their opinions are as important as everyone else's
- They pretty much run the place
- I don't care about input into "family life" because we don't really have "family life"
Your child has decided they want to give up music lessons in the middle of the paid session. What do you say?
- Out of the question; they have to stick the course
- I would try to persuade them to keep going
- If they don't enjoy it, they don't have to do it
- I wouldn't have my child in music lessons to start with
How much influence do you have on the way your child dresses?
- I insist that they wear what I regard as appropriate clothes
- We negotiate about the sort of outfits they wear
- I pretty much buy them whatever they want
- If they can afford it, they can wear it
How does your child generally get around, apart from the school bus?
- I drive them everywhere so I can keep tabs on what they're doing
- I encourage them to walk or ride their bicycle, to be independent
- I act as an on-demand taxi service
- I have no idea; it's not my business
What sort of allowance do you give your child?
- An exact sum, and there are no advances available
- A flexible sum, depending on what they can justify
- I give them whatever they want
- I give them food and board, why do they need more?
Your child has reached driving age and wants to borrow the car. What do you say?
- Absolutely not, they can wait to drive until they can afford their own car
- As long as I had been out with them and seen that they were capable of being responsible
- Once they reach driving age I plan on buying them their own car immediately
- Absolutely not, I never know when I might need it
How far away from the house do you let your child play?
- They have to stay in the front yard
- I'd like them to stay in our street
- I take them wherever they'd like to go
- I don't monitor it
What do you think your child would say about you to their friends?
- Man, they are strict!
- They are fair
- I've got them wrapped around my little finger
- Who are you talking about?
What would your reaction be if your child wanted to get a part time job?
- They can, provided I have vetted their employer
- They can, if I think there is a good reason for it
- They don't need to, I'll just increase their allowance
- They can, provided I don't have to do anything
How do you control your child's Internet use?
- I have a strict filter on the computer and they are only allowed to use it in the same room as me
- I have some filters on the computer and we have talked about what is and isn't appropriate to look at
- I don't know how they use it, they have their own computer and their own unfiltered account
- There's nothing to control. I don't allow them to use MY computer
What are your rules about your child's homework?
- I insist it is done in silence as soon as they get home
- I make sure it's done, providing them with help/other resources if necessary
- They can decide if it's interesting enough to do
- If they do it, great, if not they will have to face the music
You suspect your underage child has got ahold of a false ID and maybe drinking. What do you do?
- Go through their clothes and follow them when they go out
- Sit them down and ask them to tell you the truth. Then, if they come clean, work through it together
- Worry, but kids will be kids
- Make sure my liquor is safely locked away
Your teen is playing their awful music intolerably loud. What might you do about it?
- Turn off their music and don't allow them to turn it back on
- Explain to them about considering others and politely ask them to turn it down
- Put in some earplugs and try to wait it out
- Turn up my own music louder
It's time for your child to choose a college. Where are they going to go?
- My old college. Period.
- We'll choose the best college for their needs, together
- I don't mind where they go as long as it is relatively close to home
- If they've reached college age, how are they still my responsibility?
Your child's room looks like a pigsty! What are you going to do about it?
- Lock the door and don't let them out until it is tidy
- Insist they tidy it, but offer a reward for doing so
- Tidy it up yourself
- Say nothing, if they want to live in that mess it's up to them
