The Hunger Games: Part One

This is my version of The Hunger Games. The Hunger Games takes place in a nation known as Panem, after the destruction of North America by some unknown apocalyptic event. Panem consists of a wealthy Capitol and twelve surrounding, poorer districts under the Capitol's hegemony. District 12, where the book begins, is located in the coal-rich region that was formerly Appalachia.

Katniss Everdeen was born in District 12. She has straight, black hair, usually in a braid down her back, olive skin, and gray eyes. Katniss was close to her father and spent time hunting with him in the woods. There, he taught her about hunting, nature, and how to use a bow and arrow.

  1. I sit on the bed, braiding Penny's glamorous blonde hair. "Kadee, what if they do call my name in the Hunger Games?" Asks Penny. I let go of her hair and stare at the mirror on the dresser in front of us, looking at my precious sisters face. I couldn't even imagine.. "Penny, don't worry. You may have little skills, but there is lots of other girls, chances are you won't get chosen." I say. "I'll die for sure." She sighs. I glance at my hands, the bloody fingers of killing deer and rabbits in the forest, trying to keep my family from starvation, then my eyes return back to the mirror. Just the thought of it, if she does get chosen, she has no hope. My poor baby, I would die without her. She's my only sibling, I can't stop thinking about this.. "Follow me." I say.
  2. I take her to Dradeen, a forest right off the border of the Seam. Iv'e been here plenty of times before, but I came a different way, so I had to make a new plan to get in. While the guards are on brake, I shut off the electricity box and then cut through the electric fence with my pocketknife. I would climb it, but there's blades covering all over it. I take Penny to the center of the forest, the greenest, animal populated area. "See that bird?" I ask Penny. "Yes." She replies. "Shoot it with the arrow." "What? I'm a healer, not a murderer!" "If you get chosen for the games, you'll die without practice." "Ughhh" She steady's the arrow on the bird in the tree, pulls back, and lets go. It hits the ground, she missed horribly. I sigh, "Ok, lets start with something easy. Over there, that deer." Same thing, steady it, pull back, let go. She misses. "I'm dead." She says. "Hey! Don't you say that. You just need some practice."
  3. Steady, steady. SHOOT!" I yell, Penny's about to take a shot at another deer. Miss. "Need help?" Says a deep voice coming toward us from behind. I swing my head around, "What!?" I yelp, my sister hiding behind me. He has brown hair and brown eyes, pretty cute actually. "Your training for the games, right?" He asks. "Yes." I reply. "I can help you, seems like your not so good at hunting." He walks towards us and grabs the arrows from Penny. He aims toward two birds mating, pulls back, and lets go. The arrow went through both of their heads. "Practice makes perfect." He says, setting the arrows on a large, moss covered boulder. "Kadee, your like Katniss. A beautiful plant that can be eaten, but is as strong as an arrow-head." He said. I stare at him blankly. He looks over at Penny, "And you, your like a Primrose. An early rose, in other words your new at this, training for the Games." He looked at the ground and started walking away with no words, then he ran. I tried to run after him, but he was too fast.
  4. We're at the other end of Dradeen and rain starts pouring down, and I am totally lost. I see an exit, but it leads to the richer part of Distrist 12, if the guards catch us we're dead for sure. Either that or jail. When we get to the gate, shockingly, there's no guards around. That's odd for the wealthy area of the District, usually they are packed with guards because people from the poor part of the District would try to steals foods and armour. I slowly open the gate and search around, just to check that there isn't any defenses hiding. I motion Penny to come out. There's a bakery just a few buildings down, the bread smells so good, im tempted to go and try to steal something for the family.
  5. Me and Penny hide behind a huge bush just aside the "Percy's Bakery", Listening to a lady yell. I hear her throwing things around, complaining about a burnt loaf. A boy, about my age, comes out of the bakery. He has dirty blonde hair and a big, purple bruise on his eye. I know him from school, his name's Percy. Of course, he was named after his father. He walks just a few feet next to us, about to throw the bread away. Penny sneezes and he looks over. He sees me and her, sitting in the bush, hopeless. He throws me the loaf of bread, saying nothing, and walks back in the bakery.
  6. When me and Penny return home, we're soaked. My mom was worried to death, she thought she lost us just like our dad. He died in a coal mining explosion five years ago, when I was 11. Mom kisses us, dripping tears all over. "Tears are made of 1% water 99% fear and sadness." Mom says. But her tears aren't the only thing dripping, me and Penny are too. She goes and gets us a towel and wraps us up. We sit down on the floor and eat the slightly burnt bread. Me and Penny go change, and I redo Penny's hair. "Katniss, I love you." Says Penny. "What?" I say, tightening her braid. "I said I love you." "No, before that." "Katniss?" "Yes, that." "That's what that guy called you. You can be eaten at times, but your strong." "Oh, so why did you call me that?" "Because I want to, because your my savior, my warrior. The one that kept this family from starvation." "I love you too, Primrose." "Please, call me Prim. Haha." "I will, Prim. And that guy from the bakery, Peeta. Which is a strong, loving, flower associated with a dandelion." I laugh.
  7. Today's the day before the reaping. The reaping is an annual event that takes place in every district before each Hunger Games, where the tributes of the upcoming Games are chosen. Each district's escort randomly chooses the name of one male and one female tribute from two separate glass balls. Those picked are then the official tributes for the upcoming Games. Me and Prim are scared to death, although we're about to die of starvation anyway. Mom and Prim are asleep, It's 7:00 A.M. and the whole District is asleep!-Besides me. I quietly open the front door and walk to Dradeen. I start hunting deer and birds and all sorts of rodents, along with plicking plants, just as my father taught me. I bring home a delicious meal, and hopefully these illegal foods will last us for at least a couple of weeks.
  8. When I return home mom and Prim thank me for the food, then mom returns to her room to sob. She's been depressed about my dad dying five years ago, I'm getting so furious that she cant be strong and forget just like me and Prim did. Instead, she doesn't work, she doesn't hunt for food, she doesn't do anything. It's like I'm the mother here, and I hope she knows I only get the food for Prim, but she has to eat it also or she'll get angry. "Thank you, Katniss." Says Prim. "Your welcome baby girl. Do you wanna play a game?" I ask. "What game!?" "Hmmm, truth or dare." "Ok, can I go first?" "Sure." "Ok, truth or dare!?" "Umm, dare!" "I dare you to win the Hunger Games if your name gets pulled." I stare at her blankly. I cant believe she brought the Hunger Games up.. "I will, trust me."
