Lavender and Maeve

"Nothing's wrong with me." Lavender said. It was sort of true. "Why did you leave?"
-
‘I had. Um. Homework to do.’ Maeve
-
(Ugh.)
‘I had. Um. Homework to do,’ Maeve said, still avoiding her gaze - which someone who was telling the truth would not do. Then she sighed, fidgeting with her hands. ‘I heard what your brother said about me,’ she mumbled. -
Lavender's eyes widened at the last part. She wrapped Maeve in a hug. "I'm so sorry." She said quietly. "Don't believe a word he says, okay? You're not a bad influence."
-
Maeve slumped against her, refusing to look her in the eye. She was visibly relieved that Lavender didn’t seem to be upset at her, or think her a burden in any way. ‘I kind of am,’ she mumbled. ‘I could get you in a lot of trouble.’
-
Lavender frowned. "I don't mind." She pulled away, sitting next to her. "Besides, I could do the same to you."
-
Maeve fidgeted with her hands, which hovered over her lap, eyes darting anywhere but Lavender. ‘I-I don’t want to have to hide what we are just because I’m a princess,’ she whispered.
-
Lavender tried not to get her hopes up. They had to stay a secret, she knew that. She took Maeve's hands to try calming her down. Why is she so anxious?
"What do you want?" -
‘I don’t know! I don’t want you to be punished for being with me, and I don’t want the press to keep harassing us- I don’t even want to be a princess,’ Maeve whispered, staring at their hands.
-
Lavender scooted closer, holding her close. She didn't quite know what to say. "Hey, I'm happy with whatever you decide." She tried to look Maeve in the eye. "I love you."
-
Maeve finally looked up at her, examined her expression to find any sign that the blonde didn’t mean her words. She didn’t find any. ‘I love you too,’ she whispered, weakly, hands remaining in Lavender’s.
-
Lavender pulled her closer, wrapping her arms around Maeve in a hug.
-
Maeve tensed, then relaxed against her. She slumped against Lavender and tentatively hugged her back, head burying in her shoulder.
-
Lavender felt her freeze up. "Are you alright?" She asked gently, holding her close.
-
Maeve nodded against her shoulder, clinging to her firmly. Then she mumbled a small and muffled, ‘I don’t know.’
