Scarlet forced a small smile at her brother, and removed her hand.

Jackson stared at the floor, silent years streaming down his cheeks. For others, try could escape their troubles and demons. He was shackled to them, never fully set free from their deathy grasps.

Scarlet got up off the bed and handed Jackson some of his uneaten food. "You need to eat."

"I'm not hungry," he mumbled, rejecting the food.

She frowned. "Jackson, you need to eat."

The skinny boy shook his head. "They poisoned the food. I saw them mess with it just outside my room..." He was referring to one of his illusions, which seemed just as real to him as the sun in the sky or the air that he breathed.

Scarlet sighed. "Jackson, no one poisoned it. People here want to help you rid of...of the evil things inside your head. Please, eat."

Th fifteen year old gave his sister a questioning look. "How would you know? You're not here half the time." The last sentence came out bitterly when it was not intended to.

Her eyes softened. "If I took a bite, would you believe me? And, Jackson, I told you. I have school, and I have to take care of the house with mom working all the time. I would be here more if I could..."

Jackson nodded. "I know. I just wish I could see you more... Why doesn't Mom ever come? Is she ashamed of me?"

"No, no. It's not that. She's just so busy, even I barely see her." She sighed.

"Oh." His eyes flickered to the food and his stomach gave an involuntary growl.

He reached out a shaking hand and took the sandwich into pale fingers. He slowly brought it to his mouth and took a small bite.
