There's two different colors and three rows. If it's a note that is half black and half white, you have to play both of the colors at the same time on where it tells you to play it. Then there's just plain, single black and white notes. That's self explanatory. Long notes are also self explanatory. All you have to do is hold the note.
Those are the keys.
It's a little more difficult compared to older Guitar Hero games. It's easy once you get the hang of it. -

I actually like this better because the multicolored buttons are just one row and are usually longer which means you have to stretch your fingers. This is just three buttons on each row, and I like how you have to switch. It's a bit more of a challenge, and I like that better than having it be too easy. That's just your opinion, and that's fine.

I always found having to do the thing at the bottom annoying though

Strumming? That's not really a problem for me unless it's a long note, and you accidentally stop holding the strum bar. Then it doesn't count all of the points and restarts your note streak.

It should at least be in the options to turn it on or off.
I had a 400 something note streak on that song, and I played the note. I just didn't strum. That was the only note I missed. -
