Kagome is the reincarnation of Kikyo. Inuyasha, main character, loved Kikyo until a villain set them up and tricked Kikyo into trying to kill Inuyasha. Kikyo died, and Kagome came back to Inuyasha's time from 500 years in the future, freeing him from a spell that Kikyo put on him (as the reincarnation of Kikyo she has that power). And shenanigans ensue.
