It was meant to be a "however you want it to end" type of thing, so I interpreted it as they were all dead and they were all stuck in purgatory, which is why the smoke monster was there and it took Echo because he wasn't a good person, so it took him to Hell. And then you know the ending where they were all in the church and that light came? I took that as meaning that they went to Heaven. But it was a crappy ending and I did not like it at all.
