There are many blind people but few people in society truly understand what blindness is and how blind people do things. Blindness is seen through sighted eyes with much myth, negativity and stereo types. What does it mean to be blind? Blindness is just a physical challenge that is overcome everyday.

  1. Blindness is a physical condition that includes challenges that are overcome everyday.
  2. It is okay to touch or grab a blind person in efforts to assist.
  3. Bear in mind that blind people treat their dogs and canes as extensions of their bodies. Never distract a work animal from their job or touch, move or grab a cane without the owners' permission.
  4. Identify yourself and others who may be with you when meeting someone who is blind. When conversing in a group, remember to identify the person to whom you are speaking.
  5. Speak directly to them. Do not interrupt when they speak and always ask for clarification to better understand anything that you might not understand. Do not talk to their driver or reader or teacher or tutor, etc. Remember, you are ADDRESSING, them.
  6. Be consistent and specific when you are describing things and giving directions.
  7. Do not do for them what they can do for themselves such as serving themselves, finding things, getting things, carrying things, etc.
  8. Do not place an item in their pockets or grab an item of theirs in efforts to assist.
  9. Do not shout just speak in a normal tone of voice as usual.
  10. It is okay to use common expressions such as "see you later" around blind people.
  11. Avoid using words such as handicapped when describing blind people. Blind people do not use that word in reference to themselves.
  12. Many blind individuals go as far to avoid the word disabled as it does not accurately describe them.
  13. Always treat blind people as just another person as they simply do things differently.
  14. Blind people and how they adapt, cope and live life via alternative means are amazing, special, etc.
  15. The tool many blind people use to navigate effectively, independently and safely is called a cane, not a stick.
  16. The blind are currently segregated from the rest of society much as the blacks were in history.
  17. Blind people are currently fighting for civil liberties much as women did in history and still do today.
  18. 24% of blind people are employed.
