  Lucien's smirk disappeared for a moment at Rena's words.
  "Closer than I may think?" he repeated, turning slightly toward her.
  His red eyes studied her expression, curiosity replacing his usual teasing demeanor.
  "That's a rather ominous thing to say."
  He pushed himself away from the wall and glanced toward the dark hallway behind them before looking back at her.
  "But if you're warning me about something, I'd rather hear it than stumble into it blindly."
  A faint, playful smile returned to his lips.
  "Besides, you seem far too convinced that trouble is waiting around every corner. Perhaps you should let me prove you wrong."
  He paused, then added with a quiet chuckle,
  "Although, if you're secretly planning to murder me, I'd appreciate at least a little warning. I have an image to maintain."
