Make sure you establish how the deaths of her close family came to be in a way that's not too cliche. Also, make sure you take your time with the two main characters' relationship, as to not rush things. Really accentuate the boy's character and traits, for I think the oddities within him can really add to the story line and make it that much better for the readers. Don't rush through key points. I know many writers tend to write quickly, and when they do so they leave out key details and aspects of their work. This piece has great potential, but be sure to keep grounded to what you've decided. Don't let the plot swerve every which-way and try to keep every character in tune to what they're previously set to be. One example would be not making the mysterious boy suddenly become talkative and bubbly. By keeping characters in character, you maintain the reader's attention and trust. There's nothing a reader loves more than an author they can trust.
