Alchemists work for the people. Simple as that.

Wolflover, its the Homunculus who do. Alchemists are stated "Thou be for the people" ,they are humans. Alchemists take materials and change them into something else they use. I would explain more but my hand would be aching to explain all of it. Let me find the Wiki for it.
