I could criticise old Disney and new Disney for ages but I really love their older movies. The older ones are actually pretty woke for their time even if some parts are gross, but for a kids movie made 30 years ago it’s not as problematic as other kids movies for it’s time (cough cough Labrynth)

Everyone’s all like “but Ariel is so dumb and naive she can’t just fall in love with someone despite not knowing him”
But so was Eric. He literally saw a girl sing at him and immediately fell in love with her, started searching his entire kingdom for her and wanted to marry her immediately. He obviously couldn’t look in the ocean because humans can’t breathe underwater
And to defend Ariel, she’s extremely sheltered and has no idea what the human world is like. Ursula is like “pfft you don’t need your voice men like silent girls” and she believed her because she had nothing to indicate that hey guys actually like girls and who can speak
She also might not have taken the deal if her daddy hadn’t literally just destroyed her possessions because she saved a human from dying. Saying Ariel is helpless and stupid but she saved a guy from drowning and can think for herself. She was hurt by her father’s horrible actions and thought there was nothing for her in the ocean. We don’t see her with any friends and she’s obviously not that close with her sisters. She thought she had nothing for her under the sea and she was right because where were her 6 sisters and why aren’t they helping their dad find her. Why would she stay down there when the human world just seemed so much better, it’s what any of us would do
If we say Ariel is naive then we have to criticise Eric’s naivety. Disney making Ariel naive is not sexist, it’s just their style of romance which is a bit weird but it’s Disney
If we say “oh they can’t fall in love Ariel literally didn’t speak to him” is somewhat like saying mute people can’t find love. We say that Isha and Jinx’s relationship was so cute and sibling like even if developed fast and even if Isha had no way of communicating with Jinx because she was mute, so why can’t Ariel and Eric be the same
I have a lot to criticise about this movie too but if it was a Wattpad story ya’ll would have ate this up. The prince who is getting nagged to get married to someone anyone and the princess who hates her life under the sea and wants nothing more than to be on the surface
And if we say “Eric obviously didn’t care about her that much because he almost married the random girl who had Ariel’s voice at the end” we see that he’s not at all happy about marrying her and Ursula had put a spell on him by using her voice. When the spell breaks he immediately goes to her and is literally like “I lost her once, I’m not going to lose her again!”
And then we’re like “but Ariel was so weak and couldn’t even save herself” she was 16 what had no training in fighting. Eric, the human prince, obviously had training in fighting thats why he could kill Ursula
We’re always like “not every female character has to be strong and warrior new Disney sucks” but then when we get soft female leads we’re like “ew she should be more strong this is so sexist”
I have a lot to criticise about this movie too but thats it for now -
