To joke about something is to keep it from becoming something more than it is. To put it on a pedestal where it "can't be touched" is to give the thing power. Power that it doesn't deserve and power that influences how people perceive it.
Rape jokes, Suicide jokes, Race jokes, are all taken so offensively because the person being offended has pedestalized the thing being joked about. THAT is what's so "devastating" about the joke. -
