Thread Topic: Hello.
-
Holy s---, I want to live in India. We hardly ever get festivals down here, and I can't tell people I'm a Wiccan because they'll freak out and push their religion down my throat. What are some of the languages there?
-
Hindi, English
Gujrati,Marathi,Tamil,Manipuri(corresponding to their respective states), among loads of others...
And because of all these festivals, we keep getting frequent holidays from school! -
How many states are there?
That's awesome. Do you know how many festivals there are in a year? -
29 states.
There are loads... Can't keep track!
But these are some of the prominent ones which are celebrated in almost all of India:
Holi,Diwali for Hindus, Eid,Muharram for Muslims, Christmas for Christians, etc... There are MANY others -
I heard of Diwali before. What exactly are they celebrating?
-
There are many stories behind Diwali, but the most popular one is this:
Lord Ram rescued his wife Sita from Ravana, the demon lord, who had abducted her. When they returned to their hometown Ayodhya after 14 years spent in the wilderness, the people welcomed their king and Queen by lighting earthen lamps in the whole city.
Since then, Diwali is called the festival of lights and even today, we light lamps and candles in our houses, burn firecrackers and have lots of sweets! -
That sounds really awesome.
-
It is. And on Diwali, we usually wear new clothes/our best outfit
-
Do you celebrate Christmas?
-
Do you guys dance or have any other traditions during Diwali besides lighting the candles and torches?
My family does, and we do this thing called Secret Santa where all of our names are put in a hat, and you draw someone's name, and then you have to go buy that person a gift. And then on Christmas Eve, we all guess who our Secret Santa is. I guess I kinda celebrate it, but I also celebrate Yule. -
We have Lakshmi Puja, worshipping the goddess of wealth, and we go visiting to our relatives' and friends'houses.
Sounds fun! -
And how do you celebrate Yule?
-
I'll have to go now, DOA. Nice talking to you! Maybe we'll talk again some other time. Bye!
-
You're lucky that you live close to any other relatives because mine are 14, 17, and 20 hours away.
Well, there are different ways to celebrate it because of the different cultures. Like Egyptians celebrated the rebirth of Ra, the sun god. Romans called it Saturnalia and for the whole week (I think the whole week), the slaves were the masters and the masters were the slaves. Yule is about the winter solstice, in which the nights get longer and the days get shorter. So it's about celebrating life, and giving presents to others. You can have bonfires, light candles, dance, sing, and basically do anything. You also have an evergreen tree in your house, which represents life even in the harshest winter. -
Oh shoot, I spent too long typing that out XD. Bye.
