Gracious, it often takes longer for people to post. Sometimes seconds, sometimes a minute. I say you could post 'are you there?' if the other person hasn't posted for about 7-10 minutes.

Don't constantly ask if someone is there. People will find it annoying or unconfortable. Wait until someone really has been away without saying something for about 7-10 minutes or longer. And don't keep asking it. Asking once will give the thread a more free, calm atmosphere.
