How bout this?
There's five 'clans.' Each clan has a different ability. For instance, Clan One can use their minds-- telepathy, mind reading/washing, moving stuff with brainpower, whatever. These Clans have been in conflict for a long time. However, when a greater threat arises (I dunno what the threat would be yet.) they have to band together.
I suppose we'd make charries and they'd end up interacting.
I don't know about this one, though. Tell me how you feel about it. -

It seems to me like we'd go through a little while in an introductory phase, in which we'd both get our characters acquainted with each other, they'd be getting a feel for each other, and then we'd try to approach dealing with this "theat", and it would quickly become a boring and redundant journey soap, with a few minor spikes at which they met with a short-lived conflict.
