Jack transformed back into a human, gently holding Mildred's hand with both of his hands. "Absolutely not." Jack said
-
Mildred giggled, cheeks flushing a little at his touch. His hands were cold and soft. She pouted. 'Why not?'
-
"while being adored by you each day would be lovely, I'm afraid being a pet is a bit degrading." Jack said
-
Mildred sighed dramatically. ‘Aw, dangit,’ she said, but with a grin, and slightly flushed cheeks. ‘You’re still cute as a bat, though. Not that you’re ugly when you’re a human, or I guess vampire, you’re still cute then too-‘
-
"I'm glad to know that you think I'm cute." Jack said wiggling his eyebrows
-
Mildred blushed even harder and scoffed. ‘Well, barely,’ she said, but in a teasing voice.
-
"in any case, bat transformations in sorrow are tough. It can be hard on the mind to remember the same horrid events over and over." Jack said
-
‘Oh, that’s fair. So that’s why you looked like you were crying but in bat form? I thought you were just really happy,’ Mildred said.
-
"I used sad memories. I have more of those. Or, I suppose I remember them better. If I use happy memories, they get less happy over time." Jack said
-
‘I never considered that. But I suppose they would,’ Mildred said thoughtfully. She then pat his hands that were holding hers, and pulled her own away from his grip. ‘Are you sureee there’s no other poetry I can read? I’ll make your pie extra good and maybe even consider not burning the kitchen down.’
-
"I wrote a lot of poetry, unfortunately it's also the worst writing I've ever laid my eyes on. I think I wrote something worse than the novel far from the maddening crowd." Jack said, letting his hands fall to his sides.
-
‘Never heard of it. Your standards are high anyways. Pleeeeease can I see some of it?’ Mildred asked, clasping her hands together with a hopeful smile. She’d gotten him to show her a little bit of his poetry, then turn into a bat for her! Surely she could make him show her more!
-
Jack hummed in thought and rubbed his eye patch. He started to blush thinking about his embarrassing poems and finally decided what to do. A devilish grin crossed his face. "I'll consider it, if you give me a kiss on the cheek." Jack said, snickering. He truly did believe that his poetry was the most embarrassing thing in the entire castle
-
Mildred blushed bright red. Doing such a thing to a boy in his status would have gotten her thrown in the dungeons in any other circumstance! She did want to read his poetry, but not that much!
Perhaps they had the friendship of a duck and a goose. They were very similar but they couldn’t mate because of their different nature. Perhaps their different nature was their sexualities. Perhaps Jack didn’t even like girls! All proof she had pointed to so… In such a case, it wouldn’t be strange for a duck and a goose to do the bird equivalent of a smooch on the cheek, because they know that why will most definitely not ever like each other.
So why was Mildred blushing so much?
In her thinking about ducks and geese, several moments of silence had passed, and when she realised so she made a flustered squeaking sound.
‘That’s a strange thing to want from me,’ Mildred said with a nervous grin, trying to shift the focus onto the boy. -
"it looks like you're the one who's flustered now." Jack said, snickering a little. He felt he won in the embarrassment contest despite having one of his poems read and being very briefly doted on as a small creature
