‘Oh, that’s fair. Your wings look big enough, I reckon you could,’ Collins said. Her phone pinged and she made a brief groaning sound, then put it on silent. ‘What should we do now?’
-
"maybe we could look at the garden." Florence said, flapping his wings
-
‘There’s a garden?’ Collins asked, looking back at him.
-
"it's got a lot of flowers." Florence said
-
‘Flowers are good. Let’s go!’
-
Florence led Collins to a large counter on the second floor, which was covered in flowers. A small room behind it had even more flowers. Florence flapped his wings happily
-
Collins was expecting a garden on the grass, but this was okay too. She noticed how the flowers weren’t wilting. ‘How are they still being maintained?’
-
"Stev likes to keep them nice. The real ones anyways." Florence said. As if on cue a new creature slinked in from the back room. It had colorful markings on it's face, with eyes that seemed not to blink at all. It's eyes almost looked like they were made of stone. A chilling scratching sound rang out from the concrete as it walked. It's head had patches of hair and patches of red and black scales. It's back curved in an unnaturally uncomfortable looking way and it had claws not so different than Florence's hands.
-
Collins couldn’t respond before the thing slunk into the room, and here eyes widened at the sight of it. She didn’t know if she should puke or wave politely. She suspected none of them would appreciate her puking.
‘I’m going to guess that’s Stev?’ she asked in a squeaky voice. She had seen many unnatural, frightening creatures in the time she’d spent in the hospital, but this one had not yet proved it wasn’t a threat, hence her nervousness. -
"yep. Stev can't see very well, so you're safe. Stev also doesn't hit first." Florence said, waving with his right hands.
-
‘Ah, okay. Good to know,’ Collins said. She didn’t think she’d win in a fight with the thing, but she could probably outrun him, which was a little comforting.
-
Florence happily trotted over to the counter and pulled out some of the cheap purple ribbon yarn. Stev hurried over to stop Florence "no touching!" It shouted. It's voice sounded raspy, like it smoked ten packs a day
-
Collins had momentarily pulled her focus away from Stev to see what Florence was doing, which caused her to jump at the raspy shout. She thought that Stev should go on vocal rest - not to heal his vocal cords, but to save everyone around him from a headache. But she figured Stev wouldn’t appreciate that advice. ‘Whatcha doing?’ she asked her friend.
-
"I wanted to make a ribbon." Florence said. Stev made a horrid rattling sound. "They're my ribbons. You have to trade for a bouquet." It said. Florence mimicked back the rattling sound which made stev glare.
-
Collins opened her satchel and rummaged around, then pulled out a small, slightly crushed, origami rose. ‘It’s fake, but if you collect enough of them, you could probably make it into a bouquet…’
