I see.
In a world whose entire economy has been forced to rest in the hands of nobles and aristocrats, they can do pretty much whatever they like. A few of them came up with the idea to take runaways or orphaned children and have them trained up to fight, and by the time they become teenagers, they have to fight each other. It's not like Hunger Games, if anyone makes that comparison, I'll break your jaw. (digitally) The nobles find whoever they can, train them, treat them like their own children, and then send them in to bloody fights against others who are treated the same. Bets and all. When the kids finally get fed up with it, they run away. At that point, it's basically them against the world, seeing as how no one could really take the damage it would cause if one of the nobles withdrew their funds or anything. So they're persued by police, people who just don't want the economy to crash, all trying to drag them back to the place. Obviously, they don't want to go.
I don't know, it's pretty rough. But things can shift, if you like. -
