Fun fact: have you ever noticed that a bunch of 90s shows make fun of the fact that one day we could have Trump as a president? Shows like the Simpsons, Sesame Street (yes, the show for 3 year olds), and other silly little cartoons? And now how they’re being given attention for being “future tellers”
The reason so many of them “predicted” him getting elected was because in the 90s he talked about how he would seriously run for president one day, and no one took him seriously back when he made that claim. They thought nothing was more comedic and unbelievable than him being president
Look at us now -
One of my favorite references to this is the Animaniacs, a 90s cartoon that got rebooted in 2018. They wrote the script before the 2016 election, so even they poked fun at how unbelievable him being president would be, only for the joke to have aged TERRIBLY once the show was ready to air
They even explained in the cartoon “this was written before the election, so we don’t know who won! That means we can make all the jokes about him we want without risking our shows cancellation by him!” -
That’s also why he seems like such an over the top villain, because
A) he is
B) 90s shows literally used what they thought him as a president would look like as the inspiration for their villains. The same 90s shows and movies that inspire our media now. Him and the Soviet Union (U.S. Cold War propaganda) were the outline for the villains that shaped Hollywood in the late 1900s, and are the villains that influence Hollywood nowadays. Isn’t that so silly? -
Anyways you’re welcome for your pop culture political history lesson, these are the things I think about at 2 in the morning bc I’m so silly like that
