sTORY TIME:
My English Teacher last year made it VERY clear he wanted us to know the difference.
So whenever he said 'a lot' he would inhale deeply and bring his hands to his chest and go 'a' and then pause and move his hands a little and shove them down and just say a little louder: 'lot'.
